Hey everybody,

I've read in this forum and in some mixing books - that the pro's really like to "get familiar" with their reference monitors.

Some of the mix engineer's will even bring their own monitors home with them, and have them shipped to the studio's they work in.

I recently got a pair of Roland DS-50's and as well, I am migrating / upgrading to Pro Tools, so I will ALWAYS be using my computer from now on.....

My question is this.... would it be a smart move to use my Roland DS-50's as my regular computer speakers........... permanetly ?

Games, MP3's , Windows..... etc. etc. etc.

Would this not be a good way to be really familiar with them ?

I would just use them for everything. Unless you're a serious gamer or something and want to use 5 or 7.1 surround sound.

For me the question is: Why WOULDN'T you use your best speakers for everything?

Cool.

I thought there might be some reason why I shouldn't do that.

I hate 5.1 anything..... I have a hard enough time mixing in stereo....

Me too. ;)

Although even with a 5.1 system, the sound would still only be coming out of 2 speakers (a stereo signal) unless you have a DAW capable of mixing in Surround Sound (like Sonar).

I only say that because my friend has a 7.1 system, cause he watches movies and plays some games on his computer. And he thought some of his speakers were broken when he first started recording because sound was only coming out of 2.

Anyway, enjoy your new monitors. Listen to a bunch of music on them, and play games and whatnot. You should get familiar with them pretty quick.

Thanks !!!

I agree, use them for everything. That's what I do and I'm pretty well accustomed to to them. I think listening to other music, games, movies, etc through them will be very helpful when you go to mix your own music.
