So I know a lot of people on here say, "Is (insert mic name here) a good mic?

Then everyone else will say, "Go to the store and listen to some and figure out which one sounds the best."

However, I have a different type of question. I do no singing whatsoever, so this is not an option for me. So my question would be, how do I decide what a good mic would be then?

I guess I should say that I am looking to start recording metal bands so lots of screaming/toughguy vocals with some midrange vocal choruses every now and then. Should I just go for a mic that has a very flat response or should I get something that has a little more excited top end or what? I figure a mic or two would be good to have just to try with different vocalist. So what gives, how would I know what mic to buy?

You will probably want a few options around if you will be recording different vocalists. Most folks would say that the Shure SM-7B (or Electrovoice RE-20, or Sennheiser MD 421/441) is a solid mic for hardcore/metal/screamo vocals. Sometimes the Shure SM57 or 58 will do the job. It's probably a good idea to have at least one decent large diaprhagm condenser, too, for when you want a different sound.

If you're going to be tracking other vocalists besides yourself, and you're expecting a variety of different voices, then you're probably going to want to build up a decent selection of mics, because you never know what's going to work in a given situation and what's not going to work.

.....and this is exactly why "commercial" studios have a large selection of mics, and why you pay a good amount of money when recording in one.......
