I have never heard a T3 actually. I had a U89, and compared it to my NTK and thought they were pretty close - The Neumann was definetley better though. However, that was through bad pre's and so-so converters. I expect I will hear quite an improvement this time around. :D

The cheaper grade mics are a lot closer to the high-end mics now - but just as good? I don't think so myself.

OK, send me your set of T3's and I'll record both at the same time, on the same drum set, in the same room, and we can compare. :D

Many decent inexpensive mics exist now, and they are indeed getting closer in quality to the high-end mics, at least in the LD area. The disparity that exists is less noticable through an inexpensive signal or monitoring chain, and generally more apparent with a quality signal and monitoring chain.
