This is the same reason I was looking to get another 319. They sound pretty damn good. I still like my GT66 a little better, but the 319 is so close I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I don't feel like waiting for the tube to warm up. :D
I swapped out the capsule capacitor for a polystyrene and removed the plastic high frequency disc that's bolted in front of the diaphram. This made the top end a little more natural in my opinion.

I quoted this to remind me to do this mod. If the original poster could elaborate a bit more on this for me, particularly about the capacitor, I would appreciate that very much. Thanks

by making the top end more "natural" is being brought out more or less than before? this is a darker mic as it is. i hear taking out the disk makes it even darker from some people and i hear that it brings out the high end and makes it more crisp and clear from others.

anyone try the NY GC's yet?

I might go around there but not if they're out of their stock.

Funny I got my guitar center sales booklet in the mail today and on the last page it has the Oktava Mics...

Now the funny thing is that out of 3 stores in the Houston area there are only 3 mk-319s, & 1 mc-012...

I'm not sure about the 2500 but I'm calling GC tommorrow to see if I can get my hands on one of em...

See the schematic below. I replaced C2 with this part from Mouser Electronics. I think other's have replaced or bypassed some of the other caps, but I haven't tried it.
The HF disc removal is pretty self explanatory once you see it in person. Just unscrew the 6-8 screws holding it in place on the outside rim.
The last thing I did was take a big honking soldering iron and removed the inner layer of mesh screening

EDIT: Thanks to Flatpicker (I think) for the schem

How could you tell if it's a "real" one ? I could sell one right now and say I bought it 5 years ago or something like that and noone could tell.

considering its from an official dealer and comes with the proper capsules, i'd say its pretty "real"

They're microphones, not stock options.

At least for the 012, the quick & dirty method: if it comes with the 10 dB pad, odds are pretty good it's real. If it doesn't, odds are pretty slim.

Sorry to dig up a midly old topic as my frist post, but to give more details about the whole GC thing.

That memo was sent out chain wide to explain what all was going on since so many employees were questioning about what all is happening. Contrary to what some of you like to think, there's some really good people working for the company. Much like any other place, there will be a few tools who work there that don't know squat about what the hell is going on or what the hell to do. I've seen them, and trust me, they don't last long at all. There's a reason why people like Jay Gonzalas, Sime Restovic, and Gerran Mora all get a lot of business, and that's because they know what they are doing. There's thousands more, like the guy who couldn't find the MK012 to save his life, taht don't make the cut at all.

GC, saddly, is like the Wal-Mart of music retail. There's no two ways about it. Yes, it went incorprate a few years back, but do you know who all is still in charge? Musicians. People like Maxx Galster, whose been with the company for years upon years, and Marek Stycos who think that people come first, then gear. Sure, I maybe I am an idealist about this company, but it's taken care of me. The reason why I am hiding behind an annoymous name is because I don't know what their policy is on posting inside memos. I like my job, I like meeting the people that come in, I like seeing the faces of a person has walking out the store with all of their new gear that they bought, I like the feeling of actually helping people out even if it doesn't mean I'll make any money from it.

Now, with that out of the way, some of the biggest assholes that come across me are the ones that feel that they deserve something, or that a peice of cardboard is worth 50 bucks. These are the same people who don't understand that Guitar Center is actually losing money selling some products (i.e. the last patch of Oktava, cause think about it, if they could be sold for that cheap elsewhere, wouldn't the other places be ripping you off?), or there's a concept of base cost. These are the same people who think that a MIDI to 1/4" actually exist (well, it does per se, I made one, doesn't work though, it's good for a laugh), and those who'd argue with me that Nuendo doesn't isn't compatible with ProTools because Nuendo can't import OMF. Or, they feel that they deserve something for all the money that they spent, but fail to say how much they returned, thus, their total amount of money spent with Gutiar Center is $500 bucks. Honestly, going into a store with an air of "I don't have to work at Guitar Center, so I am better than you," attitude really doesn't help anyone. This isn't everyone, but it's usally the ones that do the most bitching.

And, if you really think that the guy behind the counter doesn't know squat, you stand behind that counter for about a week. It should be so easy that a trained chimp can do it.
