Certainly a lot of folks like the 012's. But AFAIK the main reason GC stopped carrying them was because of QC problems.

I don't believe this is correct. I think that Guitar Center sold everything the official distributor could get. Still, you should check them out before you buy.

Ritchie-I need 2 more 012's desperately, and I'm 3 hours away from any GC....does your have any of those left at $60? If so, could you grab a set for me, PLEEEEEEEASE?

Richie - you found these and didn't tell me?? I'm crushed. :-) What's their status now?

I'm moving my setup right now, trying to consolodate into one space. I think I'm gonna try out Harvey's tek on the mics I have here so I'm all plumbed-up on it when I head out to BanjoMart sometime next week. I've been wanting some SDC's for a while, and the 012's seem like a good place to start.

Plus, I'm beginning to realize I'm never gonna be able to afford Shoeps in this lifetime.:D

I have every reason to believe they're available. I'll be checking tomorrow night.-Richie

Hey, I was just looking around for the DIY Phantom Power thread and couldn't find it. Either it's burried somewhere in the middle of the big thread or else I'm blind. My searching did however turn up with two other posts asking where to find the thread...so I'll add to the pile, can someone link me to that thread, thanks,

Peter

GC owns MusiciansFriend if I'm not mistaken....could that mean that they will soon carry mc012's for cheap?
Guitar Center stores and Musician's Friend are owned by the same parent corporation, but are separate entities.

No, I don't think MF will be selling Oktavas again any time soon. They dropped them quite a while before Guitar Center stopped selling them, apparently because they didn't want the shipping/processing expense of having a line with that many returns. Over the counter replacement at a local store is not as bad as it doesn't involve any significant cost to accomplish.

Humm, well lets find out by asking everyone on this bbs who owns an Octava MC-012 or two... hey everyone, do you like your Octava MC-012's or not? Thanks

For the record... I like both the Octava MC-012's that I got from the "SoundRoom" and the ones I got from "Musicians Friend" and I haven't had any QC problems.

EDIT: Spelling correction.

I own 6pairs of the MC012, 1 ML-52, 2 MK319,1 MKL2500 tube.

All mics are working properly and all sound excellent. I did choose each one out of batches. I found no bad mics after testing at least 10 of each (each time I bought mics). That is at least 70 mics in total. I found not 1 bad mic.

The salesguy I go through, and have known for years (who used to work for Mercanary audio) told me many times that the return of Oktava mics for the reason of bad sound/defective components was very low.

So, for what it is worth, I have never seen a bad one personally.

Thanks... oh, and by-the-way, I own 6 Oktava MC-012''s... two from the "SoundRoom" and 4 from "Musicians Friend" and I also own 2 Oktava MC-319's.

First, thanks again for posting, i bought a pair myself.
My experience: I call guitar center and they confirm that they have 7 or 8 and to come down. My normal pro audio dude isn't there. So i haggle with the mangager for about 30 minutes getting them out the door for 160. Done and done. I take off, get home and one of the set screws is in the microphone and rattling around. Well crap, drive back the next day, ask for a new one, I tell them to bring out 3 or 4 so I can compare them to the one I'm keeping. He brings out 2 more. I open the first one and it's dented like it fell from being used as an overhead for a band playing on the sears tower. The other one is in perfect shape and sounds great. I don't know if this is a GC problem or an Oktava, but i truly love these mics. Thanks for the headsup,
Rafe

Kool... have fun with your new mics. PS... I bet it was GC.

It's Oktava. Oktava's the SLM-Ampeg of Microphones: If it doesn't affect the sound, they flat don't care about it. Stripped threads, stripped screwheads, debris, etc. are virtually trademarks.

I've learned not to sweat it. If the microphones work and sound good, I'll let the other stuff go, too.
