fruity loops?

I hope this gets to the right experts!
In the playlist construction in fruity loops, if I make a 16 beat pattern, why can't I add a different beat (lets say) 8 beat pattern. It changes the parameters for ALL the patterns. I must be doing something wrong because they would have seen this coming. Right?
