Free Sequencer?

Hey guys. A guy I go to college with was wondering is there any free programs to get started on in terms of cutting up drum tracks and other midi files? He'd also need a sequencer i presume. Any softwrae you guys know of? hes not recording real audio and won't be using any midi triggers, so im pretty sure an interface isnt necessary. Oh and he'll probably need to moonitor through his PC speakers.
 
Start with shareware - I'd try Reaper. Use it for nothing and if it works for you, then register it for about $30 and get the free upgrades. That's as close to free as it gets for a real program and its powerful stuff. I'm using it for my tracking and basic mixing these days. Cocos has a user forum and the developer is updating the code at least weekly.

Awesome. In terms of the free program...does it offer much functionality? I have NO problem paying for stuff (Thats why I run Cubase) but I'd rather this guy gets something outta freeware before he discovers torrents and stuff. Can you do a track like?
 
It's really only FREE for the first 30 days, although it is fully functional, non-expiring shareware, which means that technically you won't lose any functionality by going past the 30 days. But the truth is you can't beat the price for what you get, which is a fully-featured Digital Audio Workstation that rival the biggest and baddest DAW's out there, including Pro Tools, Cubase/Nuendo, Logic, SONAR, etc.

If you want true freeware you will need to look to open source solutions like Audacity.
 
Check out Kristal, too. I use a combination of Audacity, Kristal, and Reaper.

REAPER was desinged from the get go specifically to cut up drums, real ones. MIDI ones should be easy enough, though REAPER's MIDI is nowhere near its audio, it should do fine
 
Hey, does Reaper have a step sequencer that supports imported wav files? Anyone? Beuller?
 
Dont know if you / he reads computer music, but there was an issue all about Ableton live 8 which included a dvd with a full version of Samplitude 10 on it for free. Looked good. Perhaps you could get a back issue?
