Nothing too complicated going on here really - vocal, stereo mics on the guitar panned hard left & right, a stompbox and a tin of bottle caps for a bit of extra percussion.

Your constructive criticisms would be gratefully received. :)

Hey Goldilox.

I like what I hear performance wise, but I think the production doesn't do it justice.
Everything sounds a little dull to me.

I'd love to hear more of a beat, even if it is just from putting more emphasis on the stompbox and shakers.
If you're tweaking, dial a bit of high end into those guitars and try to brighten up the vocals a bit.

Really enjoyed it though. Thanks for sharing.

Sounded good. Only criticism is I'd like to hear more of a beat and I'd like the vocals to be dirtier. I think with more growl the vocal would sound better.

Thanks for the comments guys :) In light of your advice I've had a tinker - pushed the stompbox up in the mix and put an exciter on the mastering session to give it a bit more sparkle. Let me know what you think.

Chandlerhimself - I'm generally a pretty growly singer but I settled on that particular take over some more gravelly versions as it has more 'punch'.

I really love the performance. I can really hear your passion and you do the song justice for sure. I still think the guitar should be brighter and the stomping kind of kills the guitar sound, as it is "ducking" if you know what I mean. The stomping needs more impact and not necessarily more volume.

I like it good job.
I listened to both versions and v2 is better but i know what you mean about the ducking. Maybe try a hi pass filter on the stomp box and eq the mids up a bit to for more boxy impact and seperation.
idk
Like i said good job man.

Nice.
As the others have said, the guitar sounds a bit compressed.
Just curious, what did you use to mic it?

The guitar was mic'd with two samson c01s at the twelfth fret and bridge which are panned hard left and right. There's no compression on the guitar tracks themselves - only what I put on everything at the mastering stage to bring the overall volume up. It is always possible i overdid it at that point...

The stompbox in question is what I use on stage which is effectively a wooden block with a piezo in it. I'm temped to re-track the part by micing up the more traditional workboot-on-wooden-crate to see if that gets a more natural sound with some extra 'snap'. On some previous recordings I've ended up using more percussion, but I'd really like to keep this project closer to my live sound.

Thanks again for your assistance!

I like the first better, the second sounds over compressed to me, and the mix gets weird.

I really like the song and idea!

more shaker...beefier midrange for the guitar...maybe a nice short reverb on the vocals, and a little more high end.

cool song!

OK, one more go.

I took all the EQ off the stomp box and just went with the raw sound, which sounds pretty horrid by itself, but seems to sit better in the mix.

I tinkered with the master EQ, turned down the exciter a little and gave more highs on the parametric.

I tried aaronmcoleman's suggestion of a midrange boost on the guitar, but it just sounded a bit artificial (it's a steel guitar so what you hear is pretty much how it's supposed to sound).
