Foo Fighters Go Totally Analog For Latest Album: Article in EM Magazine

LOL some of you guys are so cynical haha :p :D Last time I post a link from EM! :)

Of course many of us are thinking WTF? with some of the statements in an article like this, but for other members its interesting stuff and new to them. People are always asking who's using analog these days and to what degree. This was an answer with a free article and video thrown in (Normally a $99.00 value, but with this special offer and if you act now... but wait! There's more!)

Next time someone asks is anyone using analog today I'll tell them I know but I can't tell them on an analog forum because its too controversial. LOL :eek: :cool: :p :drunk:

Maybe they used CLASP to sync the tape machine to the Computer. That way you could work with tape but still essentially back everything up as you go...

It does warm my heart to see that Dave Grohl banned any computers from the recording session, and that he especially made a point of saying how computers and modern (over)production techniques have removed any soul and personality from drummers. Of course, then he has Mr. Overproduction himself, Butch Vig, record it. So, of course the end result is it sounds like any other overproduced pop album, just more like one from the early 90's than the late 2000's. But I'm not complaining; anything that points out the problems of today's throwaway music and brings potential interest to analog recording is a good thing.
 
I have Wasting Light on vinyl and I commend FF for using the old school approach but I hate to say that album doesnt sound that much different than their previous stuff. i.e... it doesnt sound very analog, unlike Amy Winehouse or The Black Keys albums.
 
Just ordered the vinyl on the strength of the video. I haven't read the article yet, probably will after I hear the whole record.

I listened to it and really enjoyed it! The only track I didn't like was White Limo. Also, the fact that the records are 45 rpm is cool, but you have to change sides/records every 3 songs or so.

The production was really tight, really amazing sounding.

It came with an MP3 download, too. Beck, on the CD, does it have the needle drops on their? Did the CD come direct off the vinyl as the MP3's did?

The CD has no needle drops. I have yet to buy the vinyl. I wanted to be sure it was actually taken from a vinyl master instead of the CD master made to cut the vinyl. The mastering on the CD isn't the best, there is some noticeable squashing, especially on Rope, so I wonder if the Vinyl is the same way.

I saw the Back and Forth doc about the Foo Fighters and they showed the recording of Wasting Light. They recorded it in Dave's Garage and went through one take as far as I know. They used a click for the drums and the guitar was tracked with the drums, then after that bed was laid down the Bass then the other guitars and instruments. Lead vocals were recorded in the control room and backgrounds behind a sliding glass door in the garage.
 
That's cool it was recorded in a garage instead of GarageBand.

The mp3's that came with the record have the needle drops. As best I can tell, it doesn't sound like the mp3's were compressed more than the record, but I haven't listened to both side by side yet.
