Focusrite Saffire 6 USB and Sonar X1 Studio

I'm a newbie, having a devil of a time getting these two together. I've downloaded the latest updates from each, but I can't get a handle on levels. Inputs are hugely distorted even though I've used all volume knobs I see. I'm obviously overlooking something.

Help.
 
You have an O/L indicator light for each channel on your Saffire... Are you saying these are lit up as you are inputting signal to the unit?
You can push the Pad button to drop the input signal by 20db and season to taste with the Gain knob. Make sure you have selected your proper Instrument or Mic setting with that button as well.
