First time paid for recording :D

hey, a friends band will be coming to my palce tomorow to make a start on 5 tracks, AND IM GETTING PAID FOR SOMETHING FUN lol. but anyway, I've never done tracks that were meant to go together before, and, is there any tricks to getting a nice consistent sound on the finished product? so it doesn't sound like a mix tape of 1 artist with tracks off different albums for ex?

Congrats on the first paying gig....Will there be a " Producer" for the project..?.If so, he should have a direction for the sounds/tracks to come together.. If not, maybe someone in the band has an overall view of what the finished product should sound like..Finally, a good Mastering Engineer should be able to make the project sound like one compilation, instead of sveral different songs.. ( of course this depends alot on the tracking/mixing of the project)..Good luck

thanks man, and nope this is allll me lol im hoping that will be an advantage as long as i can bare in mind what's going on throughout the project, i know the music well enough and have a few ideas for the finish, and im sure the band will chip in! that GOOD master engineer with capitals has made me think twice lol i shall take extra care !

Just a friendly warning: That may not going to be your *friend's* band much longer. Friends should never pay friends - let alone anyone else - for a job they don't know how to do.

That said, assuming you're using the same gear and same location for all five songs, you should have no problem with the songs sonically sounding all that different on a fundamental level. Then, to handle the final technicalities of making sure they "fit together" properly, that's something that you'd address in mastering.

If I were you, I'd hand that off to a mastering engineer for two reasons; he'll actually know how to master for song cohesion like that, and second, he can help cover your ass as far as making your individual mixes sound as good as possible as well.

hey, i see your point with the friends paying friends thing, but ill be putting alot of time into getting this just right, they felt they owed me something for that time, and im not the brave man who will make a stand by turning good hard cash down lol
i've been recording and mixing for years, turns out i just didn't know how to define mastering, so i've also been mastering for years, shouldn't be a problem
and we are using the same place and the same gear, even noted settings and took a picture of the mic positions to give me a good starting point for the next session.
