First Song EVER Recorded!

Tim, very nice recordings. Clean and crisp. My preference is the second, because I wanted to hear the guitar. If I ever got something so good, it would be my last recording. Damn impressive for some first recordings. Damn.

1 - Awesome! The recording quality is great and the song is cool.
2 - Again the recording is great, I'm not sure what you didn't like about. Great stereo sound. And Your playing... I just sat here thinking, "Man I gotta learn to play like that!" Your the man!! Live near Cinci? Wanna give lessons? :)

Both songs are very entertaining!
 
Yo Tim, nice playing man. Nice tone from the classical guitar. I love the sound of nylon strings although I am devoted to heavy rock music! Maybe someone could invent nylon strings for an electric guitar or something!

Thanks Metalhead. I debated about using a multiband comp to bring up the guitar, since the instruments are in pretty different ranges, but decided that real’s better. Playing with that oboist was an influential experience for me, so I still hear that piece with the memory of how much I learned from him. I was 19 at the time, and he was randomly assigned to play chamber music with me when were conservatory students (he was a grad student). Anyway, I still think back about the things I learned about phrasing and intonation from his talking about music. He was a real comedian as well, and told me that he was probably the only oboist I’d ever meet who had a sense of humor because most are kind of anal from the frustration of having to blow 200 lb per sq in of air through a hole the size of a needle to play their instrument. He’s a symphony oboist now.

Thanks Ed. Appreciate it. Recorded that when I was in my early 20s through a chain to cassette tape that I’d be embarrassed to describe. I still had it because it was part of a demo tape I used at the time to get commercial gigs, which I did a lot of when I was just out of school.

Hey thanks Space. The stereo sound… thinking back, I think I might have had an Alesis Microverb in the chain that steroized it, as I had one at the time. But it was done with a single mic, and like I said to Dog above, I’ll never admit the other crap it went through before it got to tape! And you don’t need lessons buddy… you’re welcome here anytime to visit and trade coaching on guitar skills.

HangDawg, that’s a creamy distorted guitar, a little Walters/Santana-y tone to it – if it’s legal to say those two names in the same sentence. I’m listening on cans and the bass, kick and toms are really ballsy. The radio/cell/shortwave voice coming through the amp thing… I have to laugh because I had a serious problem with that during an extended weekly gig a ways back and got kind of paranoid about it.

Dogman, I wanna be a junkie too. But I’m scared of needles, man… fainted during the high school drug awareness class when the clip showed the heroin needle penetrating the skin. Cool drums and elec gtr sound.

Ecktronic, cool layering of guitar sounds in the arrangement. An Eastern feel to it in places. I don’t usually like sound effects much in pieces but they’re effective here. Piano section’s a good contrast, and the delay & verb on the vocal fits the arrangement I think.

Metalhead, great guitar lines and doubling in the arr. The rolling triplet toms have a deep raw sound. It’s a pretty impressive mix.

Boss DR550 Drum Machine
Fender Precision bass (direct to mixer)

Now the sound on it always basically sucked, but the tape sat in my friend's basement for about 12 years degrading even worse, and it was something like a 2nd generation of a 2nd generation mixdown.

Ah, the glory days of cheap analog home recording. :)

Jammin' song but I can't hear much of the vocals. Great playin'. Man you had some nice equipment at that age to! That boss drum machine kicked ass!

Cloneboy, sounds pretty cool, actually. Very good musicianship. You musta got into recording pretty early. Very good sounds. I'm impressed with it. My crap from that era sounded exactly like crap. This sounds like any indie label that put out music a few years ago. Very well done.

BTW, listened to your MST dance tune, and thought it was pretty cool. I have limited time online right now, so had to DL, and listen later. Wasn't able to leave a review, but thought it was a cool sounding tune.

Hah! Thanks man!

I think it sounds like crap, but hey... I was still in high school at the time. This was recorded the first week I got my portastudio... I didn't know what the heck I was doing at all. I believe this was the first exercise in "ping ponging" tracks around as well.

That project was designed to make fun of an ex-singer's wife (he was like 24 playing with 17-18 year olds) in the good ol' fashioned SOD/MOD style of thrash.

The only saving grace soundwise was the Mesa/Boogie II and Gibson Flying V I had at the time. :) I can't tell you how many lawns I mowed, or dishes I washed to get that setup. Heck, the stupid portastudio was like 1200 bucks too. Luckily I got the DR550 for 150 bucks from my cousin.

I definitely hear the MOD/SOD style going on there, maybe even some DRI......and I love it! :D :D :D :D

I wish I could find the "Grandmaster Plan" tapes--which were the very first thing we recorded (earlier that week). It was really lame rap. Totally hilarious and complete with Casio keyboard sounds.

Total oldschool.

Sadly, this stuff was done before Metallica's AJFA came out. DOH! I feel old now.

All my old band stuff is on cassette, that was the only way to cheaply record back the late '70s.
