I have a craap 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV card and it suuuuckss!

the reason is because when I plug in my sound, I get crystal clear quality. But when I RECORD the sound, (e.g. magix music studio multitrack, or input mpeg, avi uncompressed, or anything else) I get LOWER QUALITY meaning hiss and distortion.

The sound is great as long as I'm just playing into my computer thru headphones. It's only when I try to capture the data in any format, that the musical quality becomes second-rate.

I see sound cards on Pricewatch.com for as low as $5 plus shipping...are there any cards in particular that I should watch out for? What's a GOOD one?

(preferably one without hiss or distortion. btw...win2000)

I would definately avoid a $5 sound card. I'm a little confused though. You are using your Voodoo card for Audio?

If you just want stable consumer quality audio than get a SoundBlaster Live or Audigy.

If you want pro quality than get a Delta card that has the amount of inputs that you want for recording.

Yeah, there's this big ugly "pod" thingy that sticks out the back of my computer like a sort of pseudo-snake cable. It has RCA inputs and outputs for stereo sound and video. (this product I think didn't catch on too well)

Thanks for the advice. I saw the Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1 for $49 on Pricewatch. Audigy was $156 and I couldn't find the Delta but all's I need is solid signal going in and I can do the rest manually. (it's only me recording, so I don't need more than one input)

Delta 1010 if your on a budget, its around 600$ and its amazing for that price, No white noise (because the rack break out box gets the A to D conversion away from noisy shit like the hard drives and cpu cooling fan) it's also dedicated 8 track analog in with 2 digiral and capable of recording all of them at the same time. 8 track analog out for monitoring and 2 track digital out for the same purpose. its compatible with cubase, cakewalk and pretty much anything out there (except protools)

Got alot of money

go with Mark of the unicorn stuff (MOTU)

if you have a 1394 card (firewire) go with that, steer clear of anything USB related, usualy its limited to 2 track simultaneuis recording. NO SEASOUND, its garbage, looks nice but is garbage. One drawback to all of these are the lack of XLR inputs with even a decent preamp so you'd have to supply that.

PE@CE

And if you want 4 XLR inputs and preamps there is the Echo Mona. I have heard good things about this card. Echo also makes a Mia, which has two balanced inputs and outputs, and SPDIF in and out for $199. That sounds more like what you are looking for.
