Hi, anyone got a simple explaination on how i can fly in effects from outside the 2488? ive been struggling with this now for awhile. in the send screen, effects 1 and 2 seem like the controls for controlling an outside source. but i cant make it happen.
help.

Hmmm, I just shut it off but isn't there a place you have to assign it to external send/recieve?

i cant tell. theres really no send/receive inputs, you know? theres just effect 2 and 2 inputs, so where does that leave. ultimately i'd like to be able to effect the track my recording on with an external effect. do i go out from effect 1 into my processor, out of my processor into effect 2? or into another channel? so confused

Yo Jaeden:

Aha, welcome to the club of poor manuals.

I use the Yamaha 2816 and its functions are similar to your Tascam unit.

First, you have Effects I and Effects 2 -- these you use one at a time and although you can record with effects, it's not what most folks do; most listen to the effects in the cans, especially good for vocalists, but the effects are NOT recorded. You add the effects when you're mixing down your stereo two tracks in order to make a CD. [or CDRW]

I'm not sure if your effects are activated the same way mine are on the 2816 but I'll bet it's pretty close. Read the manual and see if you can figure it out.

Now if you want to use an "outboard" effects box, I "think" you would have to run your mic into the outboard effects box and then send that signal into your recording unit. But, as I said before, if you do that, you can't change it -- it's best to add FX after you record; it's good to have the effects in the cans, which I'm sure you can do, just to hear them -- kind of boosts the ego of the vocalist as it sounds so cool.

Hope this helps you a bit.

I have no idea what those effects send jacks do, nor does Tascam apparently.

I don't see any effects returns so the only way I see it working is to put your effects in the chain before the input.

Yo Phil & et. al:

On my Tascam 488s, and the MD8, the "effects sends" were 1/4 inch jacks that ran from the recorder to the outboard effects box for reverb & other "effects."

The 2488 and Yam 2816 have onboard effects and you don't need to "plug them in." Just open the menu and assign the effect to the appropriate track.

However, on the 2816, it's kind of a strange sequence. I have to select the effect and then raise the fader up to the "amount" of effect I want, then go back to the record/overdub menu and carry on the recording process. The Yam 2816 has an input dial knob type of thing that can increase the fx--used to test to see if the effect is functioning and/or raise or lower the amount of effect.

Kind of a weird set up as opposed to the MD8 where the "outboard fx" just plugged in and was used by turning a knob as to the amount of fx going to the stereo track.

Isn't this fun?

I have the 2488 and have not tried the effects send output either but I was thinking you must be able to run the sends into your outboard gear and return them to the 2488 somehow otherwise they would be useless. Maybe they come back to an input channel
which have to be assigned to another track or submix. Hmmmm.

ive figured now that you return the effects into another input, so there will be a dry and wet track. still trying to figure out how to control the levels.

I think I get it now. If you use the effect 1 and 2 sends you can control the effect from the single effects window. Loop is your internal effect and effects 1 and 2 are tied to those outputs. I guess you'd tend to use it when you mix to stereo and want extra effects or in bouncing.

Also you can get a second internal effect from the multi effects window and tweak it till you get what you want.
