Expensive mic + Cheap pre = ?

my 2 cents

I finally got this Manely Refernce Gold fired up.
I ran it thourgh my new Onyx pre's and compared it to a UA 610B with
drive +10 for coloring.
I also have a GT 55 which we can say is in the NT2 class of mic quality.
Vox only testing in a non sound proof Urban barn.

There is very little diffence in the pre-amps but the Manley Refernce Gold deffinately picked up more room and smoother sound ( its just smooth and refined sounding) but all the freq. is still there. ( a lie in my favor)
The GT 55 was telling the truth and letting that hard hi-eq an sylibis on through, less room got into the mic.

I'd go with the bigger mic locker first.
The biggest differnce being ditching my Delta 44 for Mackie 400F.
A much bigger diff. clairity.
I did like the UA 610 track better but thats with quite a bit of A/B ing as they both sounded the same to me; but one was a hair smoother, ever so subtle. I think you might be disappointed if you lay down serious cash and think you will hear this incredable smoothness that just puts it over the top.
When people track through an Avalon, they are hearing the opto compressor
and EQ section ( nothing you can't do with a UAD card LN1176 and pultec plugs.
I can't hear it in a full rock or pop mix. Maybe if your doing standard jazz with little or no compression.
Ie; its not gonna sound like Billy Holiday or Frank Sinatra cause of the pre-amp, its the compressor and Pul-tec EQ, and two inch tape that pumps all the charactor in.
I think I'm with the guy who said a good sound treated room made all the difference.

Mics all the way. Seriously. Get your mechanical conversions right first!

I have heard great recordings done on through crap Mackie preamps into 16-bit DAT, but only with decent mics. I'm yet to hear a great recording done on crap mics but through Great River pres.

The VTB-1 (and in fact any number of inferior cheap mixers) have much lower noise floors and transparent pres than vast quantities of gear on which classic recordings were made. Or just for a laugh, work out how expensive an old Spirit Studio desk would have cost in today's money and look at the quality available for peanuts now.

AT4050 is a great mic, extremely versatile and a definite keeper. A better pre is going to produce the sound of your mics going through a better pre. A better/different mic is going to sound VERY different (i.e. with the potential to be VERY much better) to your existing ones.

Yes, the rest of the chain is important, but let's be realistic here, folks. Even at a given price point, the difference between a B1 and a 57 is WAY larger than the difference between a Behringer and an Alesis/Yamaha/Mackie/whatever mixer or preamp.

In the context of a mix everything here that has been said is at times 100% correct, and at other times 100% wrong.

It's those flaps on the side of your head that will tell you the truth in each case.

You got it! Just went down there actually. Where are you from on the Island? Great place to live, eh!

I went with the AT 4050, in fact, and am going to use the vtb1. Just read your reply, noisedude-- it sure makes me feel good about my decision.

If you aske me would I rather have an awesome mic and a behringer pre or a shitty ass Radioshack mic and a Neve preamp...I will make the most of those behringer pres.

So, I set up the 4050. Sounds pretty damn good. Thanks for all the advice.

I bought a 4040 from ebay to replace my MXL 1006 today.. So i cant wait to see what my new DMP3 can pump out. I did notice a dramtic difference between my Beri 602a and my new DMP3. Its like night and day. My MXL 1006 sounded more natural, and warmer, as if i bought a totally different mic. Can't wait to see how the 4040 will do..

IMo, i think the mic and pre need to go hand and hand. If you think about all highend electronics and devices, You don't put low-grade oil in a race car. You don't put a slow gpu with a blazing fast cpu processor. Or you don't put 32mbs of ram into a Pro-Tools powered Mac/Pc.
