Yah thats what im guessing. I might keep them around a little longer until i ask him exactly what they are for. Because if they are for something specific he probably kept them around so the studio could keep doing the work. If not i probably will sell them. I probably wont buy the e602 and e604 because i already own the e602 and 3 e604s which i bought before the big hype with them. Yes they are awesome. But their are plenty of things i could think of buying with them. Maybe i will get a Royer Ribbon.

I keep one for kick and one for bass cabs. As you know they're good for lots of things, but again, how many at the same time?
Wayne

yah ill at least keep one if not all of them. I usually have a hard time selling equipment. It really will depend on how much i want that ribbon mic.

danny

How much would you sell them for? my loaner was deloaned to me...

Well ill let you know in a week or so. But as of yesterday, my hopes and dreams of managing and running this studio might be shattered out of no where by a punk kid with alot of money. Its a cool story how i would have ended up with this studio, just a bit of luck but out of no where the guy who really owns the studio tells me their might be plans to just sell it all :(. Talk about getting your hopes up only to get shit thrown in your face instead of tasty banana cream pie.

Anyway, if things go the way i hope they do i will let you know a price on one of them.

right on...i hope it works out for you...

Heh maybe it would be possible for us to work together if he knew anything about recording :D. Hes the type that doesnt read anything about it and will just put an EQ on every channel and do a v dip. And he will turn the bass all the way up to make it match his car stereo. And he never learns that that doesnt work. Besides, weve never really got along that well otherwise.

But it looks like things might be ok. First of all, i look into it and it looks like he probably wont be able to get the money anyway. He runs a dance club and he is already amazingly in debt. So much that he keeps asking his friends to borrow money.

But i had a talk with the REAL owners of the studio (its kinda complicated) and it seems like they wonna keep the studio and just have me run it now that they feel that im confident of keeping it going.

And i might end up just coming up with the money to buy it myself just so i dont have problems in the future either.

But i will let you know.

Theirs other plans if he buys the equipment (because thats all hes buying). i would still have the business name and my own equipment which is good enough to cut professional recordings, because ive already been doing so for a couple of years. So either way it should work out well, but other things could be better then others :D.

RE-20 for toms.

I am in the market for RE-20 w/ shockmount. I found a nice one at Guitar Ctr, but someone beat me to it.

Maybe that could work too... just figure out how much money you want to run the studio for them and try to workout a deal with them.

Last night i was stirring in my sleep and i thought of a possible solution. I have confidence that it will work to and it will be awesome. Ill let you know later if it works out.

Hey Darnold, I feel for ya dude. You know it made me laugh so hard when you mentioned the "v-dip" thing. I remember when "G-dawg" came up to me about a year ago and told me all this great info that "T-dog" taught him at the studio. He told me how T-dawg told him that midrange is your enemy and that if you don't want muddiness you gotta pull it out. So he told me that he started pulling it all out to clean up the mixes. I am surprised he hasn't learned anything over the past year. What an Ass!

Also I was talking to "B-dawg" (I love secret code) the other day and he said that T-dawg used to gte some amazing steals off campus. I guess a lot of times he just got stuff given to him because everyone thought he was the Diety of recording. He also had some major hook ups with other people around the nation from his live sound days and other experiences. He may have just got those mics for a steal so he picked them all up then when he went to leave he just didn't need them for anything. I have read a bit about them and a lot of people actually use them for voice (singing not just broadcast), it is in competition with the SM-7 which is also a broadcast mic but also used a lot for vocals (ie. Michael Jackson Thriller). I have heard a lot of good "jack of all trades" stories. Anyway, I want B-dawg to get one for the studio on campus for voice over stuff and what not, so if you end up selling let me know. I would be interested in hearing your new plan also. Don't forget if he ends up wanting to sell some equipment let me know because I want that purdy little preamp K? I will talk to ya later. By the way, I am real glad that you are gettin in there, and I really hope it works out, you could do a great job in there.

Well let me tell yah the news dudley.

This is all been a pain the butt. My plan would work extremely well except for the fact that "T-dawg" kinda ripped of the "J-Dawgs".

Let me present my plan. The reason why they are considering selling all the gear (not the whole studio name, just the gear) is because they feel it is too expensive for them to handle. I have convinced them that i was adiquit to do the job and pay the lease. So they pretty much decided not to sell the studio, but now "G-Dawg" will be REALLY upset. I decided its not the fact that he really wants the equipment, hes just pissed off because they asked me to run the studio and not him :D. SO he is determined not to let me have it.

Anyway, what i have decided would be the grandmaster plan, and infact would make "G-Dawg" happy also (even though i dont want to :D). Is we could go ahead and do the sale to "G-Dawg". I dunno how much hes offering though at the moment. This will not include any of the mics, but the rest of the equipment.

Now, the reasoning behind this is this. Even though their is alot of outboard gear that rocks in that studio, the fact is, i would even rarely use it just because it is so much more difficult to use. Sure at times i would use it to get some awesome sounsd, but were talking $40,000 dollars put into that gear on the racks that would hardly ever get used. In my opinion, if they cant afford it, its the first stuff to go. Also, this studio is on a full protools HD2 system with a Control 24 console. CAN YOU SAY OVERPRICED? I checked out the prices for this stuff and it is EXPENSIVE. Even though its nice, its not required, and if they cant afford it, get rid of it. If they get rid of the protools system then they also have to get rid of their TDM plugins, because they will be useless. So why not just sale their entire studio?

Now, i would build them up a very nice system, im talking a 32 Channel Soundcraft Ghost or Allen and Heath, with really good converters and get some Avalon pres or whatever. I calculated we could keep the price around $30,000 or less.

Now this is a system based on prices from the street, like sweetwater and 8thstreet etc. However, the better news that i found out is the studio is totally connected to Green Mountain Audio in Calorado. The studio is actually a resaler of audio equipment. So the big deal is that we will get everything for wholesale. So im talkinga bout getting an amazing sounding system ran by Nuendo 2.

Not only will these be a more amazing system in my opinion, but it will cost them less money and they will be more happy. Now an even better part, it keeps cuts my rent in half :D. So i make more profit off of the studio.

The downside now that I have run into is this. "T-Dawg" didnt directly rip them off but this is what he did.

When he sold the studio as a bundle like that, he calculated everything as if it was the NEW price. As in the price that you would buy it new on the street with 8thstreet or sweetwater or whatever. We all know their isnt alot of difference between new and used but we all know that you cannot sell used equipment for the same as new. So basically, they could be out of about $20,000 dollars which will just be gone and waisted.

So the options is this. THey will either except their losses or just keep the system, because they wont necessarily lose money if they keep it.

The big problem, is selling it all as a bundle. Hopefully "G-Dawg" will pay up to 80% of what they bought it for. Its a big loss, but thats about normal for buying used gear. However, the big problem is if he wants to spend less. They will have a bigger loss if they have to sell everything individually because of this. just and example, We would have to sell the Mackie HR824s for around $1400 for the pair to get around a 20% loss. But i dont think anyone will buy them for that much used. And it kinda of goes with the other equipment.

The only way they can get away with the 20% difference is if they sell it all in one bundle, which will be hard to do.

Anyway, thats basically it. If anyone has some advice for me it would greatly be apreciated. Its complicated right now.

OH that sucks dude! T-Dawg really burns my nuts. Now when you say sell the studio to G-dawg is that just the equipment? Or is that the building? I am just curious. Anyway, T dawg is an ass too. I know that is sac religous to say around here, but out of every encounter I have had with him and others that I have been involved in or heard about he has been a total crook. I mean everything that went on with the "J-Tribe", the crap he would use at his studio that was the schools, the damn retarded opinions he had about things, the rip off of selling the studio, and even the crappy recordings he would pump out of bands and still charge them full "pro" price for his half assed job of it. AArggghhhhhhh!!! Anyway, enough venting for me. I think what you are saying is a great plan. I think the Control 24 is a cool item, and I don't mind Pro Tools up at the studio, but boy can we say waste of money?? Dude if you just stripped the tracking room, and put up a hand full of "Real traps" that room would sound sweet. Then keep the u-95, u-87's, small condensors, an RE-20, picked up a Royer or 2, and then the mics you already have (unless you want to sell one to me ;). Then get yourself a smokin hardware Reverb, a couple RNC's racked, a couple RNP's, an Avalon, a Great River 2NV, and hold on to those Hardy's. Then set up a sweet Nuendo 2 system with a couple UAD-1's, and then that freakin Ghost and that would sound better and be more funtional than what is already in there and you could have cash left over for a new PC with dual processors and a couple of 18 inch LCD's. Heck why not throw in some Genelec's while your at it. Or some nice Tanoy's. The reason I mention a good outboard reverb and the compressors is that they would be good to have when you want to mix down through the Ghost. Maybe you could even splurge on a L@ ultramaximizer hardware unit, I have been reading and a lot of people on RAP feel they beat out the Apogee Rossetta's (2 channel version of the big boy), and some other biggies including Lucid, plus you would have a sweet a limiter and two golden channels of conversion. You can get the high end RME stuff pretty cheap right now, and the Lynx stuff looks great if you don't want to go mobile, and you can add a lot of stuff through SPDIF and ADAT. Of course I am just rattling off my dream gear (yet functional list) as I am sure it is similar to yours due to our similarity in taste :) Remember you need to keep pushing for those Hardy's for me OK? :) :) MMMmmmmmmHardy's. For real though If you get a chance I would like to come down and hear them. I want to see if the fabled are what they have been built up to be. Anyway, fill me in and pick up that U-95 for me. Also I need to talk to you about those Waves Disks down there. I will catch ya later.

Yo. Yah im feeling the same way about "T-Dawg". It has really been a pain and what i have conluded is the "J-Dawgs" have lost that money whether they like it or not. Whether they sell it or not.

Anyway, the system you were saying was exactly what i was thinking. Good computer, good Ghost or Allen and Heath, run all the channels through the board, get nice preamps, good converters, get some UAD1 and possibly a TC.

Hey if your free today around 2 you should give me a call. The whole group is getting together to decide what needs to be done and i could really use your back up advice on this. "MJ-Dawg" over their really likes protools and he will need some extra convincing that we can get better results on something else.

So maybe ill give you a call incase you dont get this reply soon enough because i could really use your help.

Keep them all, they are very versitile mics. I use them on a lot of instruments. They are great percusion mics, and are nice for floor toms, though I tend to use Beyer 201s more. They are also one of my absolute favorite mics for distorted electric guitar. As has already been mentioned, they are great for vocals (that is the Ray Charles vocal sound, for instance).

Ok, it seems everything is going smooth.

Its almost time to start designing the new studio. I am going to have to get rid of some of the mics in the big sale. But i think it only includes getting rid of one of the RE20s to him and depending on how things go will determine about selling the others. Hes also taking the MK-012's but im not too worried about those as long as i have the K184s. Hes taking a AKG 414ULS but i am keeping a pair of the AKG 414EB P48 (yup, the originals i think). Im definately gonna keep the N U87s and hopefully the SoundElux U95, but he may be taking the U95 also. I think alot of it is up to me on what is allowed to be sold. But we definately need to sell the majority of the stuff. Decided to keep 2 of the DBX 165As, one of the Lexicon PCM60s and the John Hardy M1 (which is amazing :)). The rest of mics im going to keep and the rest of the $75,000 of gear im going to get rid of and rebuy. Get ready for a thread coming up on helping me decide what to get :D, because its gonna be fun.

I might be interested in selling one of the RE20s which would leave me with 2 and i will get a Beyer Ribbon instead. I think with 2 RE20s and 2 MD421s i should be alright as far as percussion, especially if the RE20s bleed alot.

Anyway, i think this thread is about to die because its lost its subject. But this subject will probably continue with the "refurnish darnolds studio thread" :D.

Danny

Hey dude let me know when you start to sell. I may be interested in an RE-20. Also good choice on the stuff you want to keep. Let me know when you start the new thread and keep me filled in on the juice. I will catch ya later
