Does a mic signal have to be amplified before going through an EQ?

Does it change the sounds characteristics if it is/isnt?

I was thinking about getting a ART EQ452 to eq my vocals being that the Tampa doesnt have an EQ, to roll of the low end, and make a few bumps here and there.

Does it matter whether I go through the EQ before or after the PRE/Compressor?

Yes, it matters. An eq will not "eq" a mic level signal as well as a line level signal, which is what it is expecting to see and use. Run the mic through the preamp to boost the signal to line level, then run it through the eq before conversion to disk.

PLUS! Don't get a graphic eq for studio stuff, it's great live but not for recording. Get a parametric so you can suck out offending freqs without pushing the signal through yet another cheap processor. Read this....

You need to preamplify the mic signal before running it through an eq. Also, as has been stated, using a parametric would be better for your purposes than a graphic eq.

the order is important. impedances have to be matched and levels have to correspond for optimum signal transfer and low noise floor. that's what we all work towards anyways
