Electrovoice RE15 question

Hi,

Does anyone know the reason for the long "grill" thing on the shaft of this mic ? What is its purpose ? I've heard, possibly erroneously, that it has somethin' to do with "phase" ...

It gets rid of the proximity effect. So that when you get close to the mic it doesnt get bassy
