How can I make my electric bass sound like a stand up bass?? I record direct in to the board and can get a fairly acoustic sound using a piece of foam under the strings in front of the bridge and modifiying my tecnequie (I've fooled some people doing this) but I need the richness and fullness of a bass fiddle with gut strings..Is there some kind of effect or something that I can plug in between the guitar and board to make this happen?? Thanks in advance..

Thanks guys for the suggestions and links...Found a lot of good info..Sounds like it may be time to get the fret pulling pliers out!!!

You may want to get a fretless bass instead. The time and trouble to remove the frets (not to mention trying to get them back in without paying someone to do it) may make the cost worth it.

I would get a fretless bass. I have played double bass a few times in a pinch but it plays quite different than an electric bass and is a different instrument altogether. There are solid body electric doublebasses that are kind of cool, you might want to buy one of these if you want that kind of sound because even a fretless electric bass like a Fender can't really get that sound.

I've been playing double bass about 20 years. The surest way to NOT sound like a DB is by using any kind of pick up. I have not tried this, but I would think a fretless acoustic bass guitar recorded with a microphone is a good bet. Anyone tried it?

One trick that might work is to pluck the string (fingers only) near where the neck meets the body, or even a little over the neck itself. On my basses, this produces a duller tone and on my fretless it helps to get that slow blossoming "mmmwahhhh" sound.

You can't. That's why upright basses still exist.

Acoustic bass guitars aren't that great, in my opinion.

Some fretless electric bass guitars can sound cool.

Electric upright basses can sound cool, too.

But none of them will ever truly simulate the sound of an acoustic upright bass with gut strings.
