NL5

Unpossible!
OK - While we wait for Finster to post another PMC, here is a short, somewhat heavy song for everybody to mix, compare, and critique. There won't be an official contest - no judges. The tracks are completely unedited, and are not of the greatest quality. They were recorded at different places with different equipment, by different people. They are all 24 bit/28khz tracks that all start at the same place. I'll let you guess the song title :D - BTW, if you are easily offeneded, you may want to steer clear.......

Awesome. I hope there's a decent track count on this. I want to see how much better my computer is performing now that I've got it running on a faster drive. Thanks. :D

15 tracks

Time I was in bed but I've snagged it and I'll have a pop at it tomorrow

ok I gave this a shot, i had to mix with just the phones though :D so it may not be to good..lol.

amazing how different these 2 mixes came out..

out of these 2 mixes I liked NL5's better even though it was a bit low it was an easy decision.. YMMV

I did a mix earlier, then listened to the 2 already posted...so I tried to change mine up to be different.
Girl

It still seems a wee bit muddy, but I ran out of time today.

here's mine...

i did this in about 3 or 4 hours i think. my first mix i burned a CD and checked it on a few different stereos and found some probs, so i revised it a bit, and tweaked a few things that maybe i shouldn't have. hopefully it sounds better now. in the first mix i made, the snare was completely lost, and i'm having trouble getting it to peek thru the mix, and the kick gets lost too. i guess i suck at mixing drums, but this is probably only my 3rd or 4th attempt on mixing a whole live drum kit. and i'm pretty sure i made the whole thing just too damn loud. anyway, let me know what you guys think, and give some tips on how to fix the screw-ups in my mix! :o :o :o :o :o

Welcome to Square Wave City, this is a Dynamics-Free Zone, hahaha

that was pretty fun... although i dont have any of the "right" equipment for the job. (shitty ass soundcard, PC speakers, etc... ) maybe someone can give me some words of wisdom on how it sounds to them, so i can reference it to my own recordings.

...either way, i wouldnt mind doing a couple more of those, good practice... keep 'em comin'!

something funky going in there. don't know what it is but everything sounds like it's in a tube. the only thing i can mix is a margarita though. :D

Actually, Zed, yours sounds pretty good also. Not near as muddy as mine....

And whjr15, it doesn't sound bad at all. Pretty clear.

Nice work guys - I liked Zed's the best so far.

This thing had been downloaded almost a hundred times, and only four people posted - c'mon guys post 'em up!!!!!

:D :D :D :D :D

Ah, crap! I DL'd from work but forgot to stick in on a CD-R and bring it home. I'm taking the next couple of days off, and I'm still on dialup! Crap! I'll have to wait 'til Friday.

woohoo! i had fun with this one man, on the really screamy parts, i used a heavy metal version of the "exciting compressor". i made two copies of each SCREAM part, panned one left and one right, then offset the start times, with one being slightly before and one slightly after the original. then each of those tracks were sent thru the ol' Tube Screamer at different settings, and then i blended with the original track so it's not too completely obvious. i think it came out sounding kinda cool, and it's something i've always wanted to try but haven't had the right song to try it on. and i'd like to thank my limiter for letting me overuse it in this song. :D

hey that sounds cool, i like the kind of reverse-reverb effect on the vocals. makes it sound more evil, which is good.

I thought it would indeed give it that nice little evil touch it needed for me..
I also really dig your vocal mix man!! I need to try that sometime how you did it..
Also on the backing vocals I used amplitube...I thought it gave it a nice touch...

Some more people should try working on this..it's always fun!!!

did it on headphones and now my ears are bleeding. i know the kick sounds like doo..........could'nt figure out what to do with it. thanks for posting the files NL5, it was fun. now i must sleep...............nighty night.
yeah, the drums aren't great in this, Travis. The kick is gone. But, the vox seem ok, and you got the heaviness in the guitar to stick out. Now, just fix the drums.... :D

Well, I did a remix. Changed the verb, and the verb levels on a couple things. Tweaked the drum and vox levels. May have abused the precision limiter a bit - new toys tend to get a bit overused. :D

Two things stand out to me. The snare is a bit loud, and it sounds like the master buss compressor is pumping pretty hard........
