ok, i went to my freinds studio yesterday and something i saw had me wondering? he has a http://www.behringer.com/T1953/index.cfm?lang=ENG pluged into a m-audio firewire 410 and then a Neumann TLM 103 plugged into the behringer. my question is would he get a better sound plugging the tml into the 410's preamp or the behringer. his vocals sound very professional, but i just want to make sure he gets the maximum quality.
 
If he likes the color of the Behringer pre then he has to plug into the M-audio so he can get his sound into the computer. There's really no right or wrong way as long as you get the signal you want. I've seen people do stuff I would have never fathomed but it works. I don't see a problem with it besides he's using behringer. Who am i kidding...I got a Behringer pre-amp myself and its a pretty good bass DI.

Remember recording is an ART and not a science. As long as you don't electrocute yourself everything is all subjective.
 
Its always wrong to plug a Neumann into a Behringer. You never ever do that :)
 
Putting a mic through 2 preamps doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Are you sure he isn't going from the behri into the line ins of the 410?

As has been said putting a $1000 mic through a $35 preamp is what's really baffling. :confused:

I think they mean to imply that it's a ridiculously cheesy preamp to be running a relatively serious microphone into.

You're right, I thought it was 4 channels because of the 4 vu meters. I'll rephrase:

Putting a $1000 mic through a $65 preamp (I rounded down the first time) is what's really baffling. :confused:

I entertained discussing this too, but I figured that it wasn't going to go anywhere, so I just let it go...

Since neither of those two preamps is worth much, its a lose-lose situation. In the end though, you use what you have (which is usually what you can afford) and do your best. If the Behringer is the preamp that sounds the best with what you have available, then that is what you use.
