Your mo-o-ovin' so fast..
Hey im just starting out and i was woundering which you perfer:
1) M-Audio Fast Track Pro
2) TASCAM US-122 USB Audio/MIDI Interface

i play acoustic music with vocals and i dont really need many inputs, and i still dont know which mic im going to get....

thanks alot guys, tell me if you need any more information.

Gotta ask: Are you at all "married" to the idea of recording digital ? There's nothing wrong with it but there are other options, you know, ones which may prove more satisfactory to you and your setup.

I understand what you saying. I guess i havent really seen much on analog recording except the 50$ musicians friend sets, which im guessing dont cut it. Ive been doing my own thing on my computer and i really just need to take the crappy sound out of my recordings, and since im low on money i was thinking of what i said earlier, which was a suggestion from someone in the newbie forum. But me screwing with the tape and everything, yes i really do think it is an art but i just seems too complicated when my main focus in playing-then recording.
Im sure i sound like an idiot, because i really dont know anything about analog...

am i just clueless? Maybe this should be in the beginer section, but how could i even do analog without cutting sections of tape off a reel, or using a cheep tape deck? Just woundering i mean, seeing as i am about to make an important decision with recording.

thanks.

I think either unit would work. The Fast Track Pro is pretty new and I don't know of anyone who is using it yet. Based on M-Audio's general reputation, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. It appears to have a few more options (like the fact that it can be powered by either the USB bus, or a standard AC adapter) than the Tascam, but I don't know much about the software that comes bundled.

The Tascam, otoh, comes with Cubase LE, which is a pretty solid recording program. This unit has been around for several years and is, overall, a solid performer.

Thanks alot, so would you say that for the same price the fast track pro is more solid, (as long as the software included is well done), or do you think for practically the same thing, i should go with tascam because cubase is included...

I guess the most important thing is:
could i use this with my cool edit pro 2.0 ...? That is really important, but i just assumed that it would work.
------thanks------

Either unit should work with CEP. If you're happy with your software, I'd probably get the M-Audio.

My friend,

My intention is/was not to make this thread into yet another Analog vs Digital thing but from your post I really DO believe that in order for you to decide which is best for your particular situation, you NEED to be aware of Analog and that Digital is not the "gospel" everyone toutes it to be. It never was and never will be. My suggestion for you is to explore the Analog Only forum, study its past threads/posts, keep your options open and make up your mind that way and don't let someone with an obvious bias steer you "their way". The worse advice, EVER, that I see "newbies" get from more regular members is to "go digital". I think it would be fair to suggest exploring BOTH digital and analog, by researching it and feeling out each of those options. Then, and only then can you truly make the best decission. It is the opinion of myself and many others, however, that the best way to learn to record is by using an inexpensive 4 track tape recorder, many of which are talked about constantly on the Analog Only forum and which will cost substantially less than what you are asking about and with which you will be up and running in no time, having more fun and sounding great. Again, keep your options open and don't fall into the "digital only" mentality.

Though, obviously, I have my preference and a certain bias, it is up to you to get mega informed on choosing the right thing for yourself and whether it be digital or analog, both of which CAN provide excellent results governed mostly by your talent of knowing HOW to record, you'll have to make the best decission for yourself in the end.

I've been a US 122 user for 6 months or so now, and the little box has been perfect. Nice, usable pres, switchable phantom power, quiet....it's a nice little box.

Either one ought to do what you need....but I love my 122.
