Actually, you might want to carefullly reread your post for the irony. I count 2 grammatical errors at quick count. I could also point out several of your posts here that have have spelling errors and typos. Not that I care, I just find it ironic.

To state that theft is wrong only on moral grounds is ludicrous. The morality it is based upon is derived from the way our society operates. The fact that you personally cannot measure the cost of piracy does not obviate the fact that it is theft of another person's labour. Who gave ANYONE the right to determine that they do not have to reimburse the developer for their product. Why them and not the next person? Why them and not I? You?

finally, I find the argument "is also immoral to judge another" ridiculous. I will call a thief a thief. They can try to rationalize it away, but that still doesn't change anything.

Guess we share the same views on irony. (hominem?)

Nothing gave them the right. Never said they had a right to steal. Never said they shouldn't reimburse the developer. These are all good OPINIONS. It still boils down to moral values. Period.

Ya know, I have tried being nice. The feedback was meant to show that this is simply a debate, and nothing personal, with no lack of respect. However, you keep insisting that it go a different way, and then publicly bash me for offering an olive branch. I assure you, the positive feedback will not happen again.
Gloves are off.
What are you getting so upset about, Toker? All I did what reiterate your own arguments you made in this thread yourself. You wanna get pissed at me for what you said yourself? Step down, son.

Your version of "being nice" is only what comes out of one side of your mouth, like in private. In public you take back everything you say in private, with interest.

And for every five words in public where you say stealing is wrong, you say 500 words where the people other than you that say so are wrong in their reasoning. And on top of that, there has not been word one from you in rebuttal against any of the pro-piracy arguments on here. You keep insisting on one side in small words that you are against the pro-piracy side, but then only strke at those on the pro-rights side, not in words but in paragraphs.

You still have not answered why it is that our alleged wrong-thinking righteousness irks you so much more than similar behavior on the pro-piracy side.

You also seem to ignore any time one of yor points is struck down, instead just deflecting the so-called "debate" someplace else, often somplce off-debate point.

The President of Sony Records was stating that the industry is worried about illegal downloading because they can no longer MANIPULATE (not "trust") the consumer into buying what they deem as the next big acts. They can no longer limit what the consumers choices. The key word here is "MANIPULATE", not "trust".
Unfortunately, the word "manipulate" is of your paranoid construction. Nowhere in the interview did he state the concept of manipulating the public that you state here. He knows just as well as anybody who is successful in the sales business that is to be successful in a market, you have to give them what they want.

And really, I can't state this enough....
....please learn how to SPELL!
Look, I'm a lousy typist, OK? I never did become a touch-typist who looks at the screen while typing. It has nothing to do with my spelling skills. So sue me for having bad typing skills.

Toker <~~~132 IQ. Honor student. 3.8 GPA. Graduated in the top 3% of the State. 3 years of Behavioral Science. 2 years of Law. Managed a major audio/video media distribution center. Was developing software before Windows was even an idea. Pilots Jets. Smart enough to know that the Federal Reserve is neither federal, nor does it have any reserve. And last, but not least.... CAN SPELL.
Now who is trying to judge themselves superior, hmmm?

OK, you want to play that game? Here's my similar workup:

- IQ tested twice: 10 yrs old: 147 I.Q. - 39 yrs old: 150 I.Q. Was double-promoted from 2nd to 4th grade. Graduated high school at the age of 15.

- Graduated with honors (4.0 average) from two computer programming programs in college (Pascal and BASIC Mini and Manframe Programming). (Honestly, I could have taught those courses as I had already been a self-taught programmer for 3-4 years before taking those programs just to get the diplomas on my resume.)

- Have been programming since 1978. First computer: Altair 8800b. Computer systems certified on in operation, management and programming: IBM, System 370 and System 4341 mainframes, IBM System 34 minicomputer, Texas Instruments 990/DX10 minicomputer, Hewlet Packard System 3000/68 & 3000/70 minicomputer.

- Operating systems officially certified on: Texas Instruments DX10, HP MPE, HPIX, Digital Research MultiuserDOS, LDOS, MS-DOS 2.11-6.x, SCO Unix V, Windows 3.0, Windows NT 3.51 & 4.0 (Workstation and Server), Windows 2000 PRO.

- Programming Languages: FORTRAN, COBOL, RPG II, TurboPascal, BASIC (many dialects), DOS Batch scripting, UNIX shell scripting, Visual Basic, Visual C++, DHTML, Javascript, Perl, PHP. (Granted some of those I haven't used in years, and have forgotten. About all I remember form the COBOL days is "PIC 99" ;) )

- Owned my own computer consulting business for three years. Clients included the Museum of Science and Industry, Cook County Sherrif's Department, The French Govenrmnet Tourist Office, River Forest Police Department, and Super Video Productions.

- Worked as a computer consultant for Comdex '99 Chicago at Navy Pier; connected and managed all networking and internet IP gateway connections for the entire Comdex show.

- Worked as tech engineer, software developer, and webmaster for D-Vision Systems/Discreet Logic; helped design, beta, and support the first D1 digital broadcast quality video and audio editor for the WindowsNT platform. regular daily clients included Jim Henson Productions (the Muppets), Superstation WGN-TV, Bass Pro Shops, and Metro Digital L.A. Movies our stuff was used on and I supported included "Lonesome Dove" (I worked in developement and support alongside Larry Sherwood, who won awards for editing that movie), "ID4: Independence Day" and "Forrest Gump", among many others.

- Built my first home studio in 1979. Teac 3340, Pioneer RT1020L, ARP2600 w/Sequental Circuits 800 sequencer (both controlled via TRS-80 w/custom homemade programming. Since then have worked my way up a little bit. I now have run my own digital media business for about 8 years and have worked live and in many professional and home project studios with musicians for Stevie Wonder, John Hiatt, Spirit, The Meters, Lisa McClowery, The Neverly Brothers, and American English, amongst many other bands and artists.

- Smart enough to know that virtually everybody that's been through high school civics class knows that the Fed has not had enough gold reserve for decades, and that that is a virtually irrelevant fact.

- Even smarter in knowing that most conspiracy theories are indistinguishable from religion; they both require leaps of core faith in things unproven and by definition unprovable, and they both are used by the believer as tools to help them cope with the world by believing there's a higher power upon which they can hang ultimate responsibity for most things unpleasant. The only major difference is one of the higher power's attitude and actual position: omnipotent master or scheming conspirator. The rest is wallpaper.

I'm also smart enough to know that I'm a nobody in the grand scheme of things, and that my resume is nothing. Yet it makes yours pale by comparison. So let's stop the dick waving contest. Mine may be small, but it looks big next to yours.

The Federal Reserve is far from a "conspiracy theory".

Anyway, impressive resume.
But you don't fly jets.:p

I'm not upset at all. I told you, I come here to release stress. If I'm upset, I am releasing said stress on this thread, but I assure you, I am not upset because of this thread.

Sorry, I've only been programing since '82. Hobby, not a career (although I have had many good job offers, and my present position requires better than average computer skills). Also, I only finished high school 1 year early. Guess you are superior to me*.

I didn't list my experience to get into a "I'm smarter than you" (I have a bigger dick**) pissing contest. I did it because my intelligence was called into question. It was meant to show that I do not lack education, not that I believe I am better than anyone else. Funny that you would take it as me judging others against myself, as it backs up my statement that it is in your judgmental nature to view things in such a way. There's that irony that amuses me so much.

I'd love to sit you down with some ink blots.

*but I can spell.

** even though I do.

this thread is out of control ~
Agreed. But I gotta tell you, that Ignore List feature on this BBS is wonderful. I've now been unburdened from this bullshit. It's like a breath of fresh air, the digital Breathe Right strip of the BBS world. I highly recommend it to all the sane people here who have been beating their heads agaist the wall trying to talk to the unhearing.

You got the last word, Dave. You're welcome; I knew you'd enjoy them, whatever they were.

G.

you should write him back and see if he really did ignore you hahaha.I can't believe people are still bickering a bout this...

Holy crap!! You're right. Blessed silence.:D

It's because you sound intelligent that I'm addressing you. Your seeming intelligence lends credance to your seeming support of IP theft...........

Anyone that disagrees with you must be an idiot? Small mind you have there, buddy.

Wow, I was wrong. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. While you're comparing brain pans with Glen, you can't even read my post right? Once again, someone tries to be civil and address you as an intillectual, if somewhat misguided, and you prove once again that your large brain pan is full of kitty litter that needs changing.

I'm now done with you too, go masturbate somewhere else please.

Wow, disagree with somebody, and you are an idiot. I'm sorry, I didn't understand the rules.

Glen will not put me on ignore. As I stated, he comes here for the same reasons I do. However, I will enjoy the break from his post, as his spelling skills make his post painful to read.

Robert, you are right. I misread the last sentence in your post, and focused on the word "idiot", believing it was aimed at me. I was wrong. Guess Glens post left me feeling a little defensive. My bad.

It's funny that you guys are more upset with the guy that agrees that stealing is wrong, than you are with the thieves, simply because we don't share the same views on why it is wrong.
...but I'm the idiot?

You guys bitch about the thread, and my posts, but nothing was forcing you to keep coming back. Then you stomp off in a hissy fit because I refuse to think just as you do.
Like I said, some people just want to throw stones. Guess they ran out of them.

Toker <~~~still amused.

Why don't you tell us all why you think stealing is wrong?

Toker, I had a go at you, but you seem to be keeping your cool in the face of being told to "go masturbate somewhere else". Robert, cmon whats up? Is that the best way to express your opinion? Are we still talking about music??

I'm a theif... but I always was. You guys might be on the moral software high ground but God DAMN if you aren't a bunch of little bitches.

Do I personaly give a Fuck about your IQ score... NO. Neither does anyone else except those looking to compare egos. IQ has nothing to do with common sense and morality.

And I can't spell worth shit and I don't really care. And if that's the best argument you have against ssomeone then you have a weak case.

Can't we just agree that some people think software piracy is wrong and others will never give a fuck about what those people think? Isn't that what this thread has really tought us. If you wish to post to feel morally supperior then so be it but no one really cares.

oh yeah... and non of this will change a damn thing. Now THAT is irony.
