Do you buy that expensive recording software, or just download it?(Read authors post)

Well, I would probably take my own point of view with a grain of salt. It's just my opinion based on my experience, with the company I work with.

However, the now famous Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were both bedroom developers at one time. Their current operating costs are much higher than it used to be.

Also the supply and demand of products drives prices up or down. This is why the U.S. Goverment pays farmers not to farm (otherwise the cost of say Oranges would drop and cause a crisis for the Orange Juice, and Orange Farmers), or the same reason why billions of diamons in thousands of mines don't suddenly hit the market, because it would devalue the cost of diamonds.
 
I have mixed feelings on this.

I've only read a few of the replies on the first page so I don't know how the thread has evolved, but I prefer to download first. Fortunately I'm in the position to save for software if I like it that much, but I certainly grudge risking x amount of money on software that I may turn out to hate.

If I was unemployed it would be impossible for me to afford software...so what do I do?...go without and ignore the burning desire to create music? or download the software for nothing and continue on my way.

The creators obviously need the support but only once I'm satisfied with what it is they've created.

Good stuff. How are you finding it? I've got a couple of mates who reckon it's the nuts, so much so that they're trying to tempt me over the dark ('mac') side. :)
 
Wednesday I had never seen a mac nor logic pro before. Today I´m up and running like never before making and producing music. I don´t have time to tell you about all the great features as I´m heading out now.
My current project holds 22 stereo audio tracks and 63 realtime plugins, many wich is very processor hungry. From the prosessor workload bar I can se that my 2 processors have a workload from 10%-40% during the playback. It never exceeds 40%.
The first 3 days I regret the buy coz I couldn´t even track a ballad. Said in other words, the learning curve is a 3-day steep hell weekend. Today I work 3 times faster than I did in Cubase last tuesday.
Can´t recommend it enough. It´s just so great. An update to 7.1 comes out in some weeks. It can be ordered now. The update costs 19 USD.
 
Logic is amazing. I went to various product shows over the past few months (Logic 6, Sonar 4, etc), and Logic beates the hell out of everything else on the market. Unfortnately I work on a PC and can't afford a MAC right now, so I'll stick to Logic 5 (the lastest version that supports PC) forever, I guess. :(
 
Coooool. I'm needing a new interface for extra IO, so if I buy a Firewire/iLink one it will give me a chance to see myself over to Mac if I choose to do so. It looks like a strong possibility in the slightly longer term. :)
 
i, like others, use pirated software to test out the various products on the market.

once i find the product i like and feel comfortable with, i buy it.

as an aside, if you ever make any money off of any software you use, you owe it to the creator of that software to purchase a full legal copy.

also, to whoever said "what do these big name/high dollar software companies offer that n-track and other cheaper offerings don't" - my response to this is: a lot. first off, any mix recorded in cubase sx flat out sounds better than n-track. to some, that quality alone would justify the higher price. the midi capabilities are also very extensive in cubase, which is a big deal to some, including myself.

to throw out an old cliche, you get what you pay for.
 
I have recorded with both Cubebase, and N-track, and have found no difference in quality of sound. Infact, I have found no difference in sound quality in any of them. As far as Midi goes, I have found no limitations in N-track. Could you be more specific in the difference in the midi between the 2? I'm still failing to see any reason for paying the higher price for Cubebase over N-track.
 
Glad to see that the "I buy it" bar on the graph is ahead by almost a percentage point.

I bet this thread was really created by an alien civilization that's monitoring the Earth... and that they have an odd combination of expertise in two areas - weapons of planetary destruction and intergalactic copyright law. Hope we pass the test.

I usually download a pirate version and try it out. Yeah I know some companies offer a trial period, but I want an uncrippled version to try, and I don't want to be rushed (30 day trial is NOT long enough to do a complete project)

I'll do a complete project using ONLY the new software to see how I like it... if I decide it's to become a part of my asenal I buy a legit copy and ditch the pirate one.

Another thing to note is if you are running a business then you want the business machine "clean". I've been audited - it gets real nasty!

Yup. But then we have to consider that this is a time of instant gratification. Kids no longer know about the thing we once called "work ethic". It has been replaced by a thing called "free and easy". People don't want to pay for things, but they still want quality. That, to me, is absurd.

If you don't have the $$ right now to buy what you want, either wait and save, or get it on credit. This desire to get quality software for free is just stupid. :mad:
 
I wonder how many of those that are saying "if you pirate you are a sinner" listen to downloaded music? I don't know one person that doesn't have at least 1 illegal copy of a song.
 
i buy it, and it hurts.


it's hard to pirate anything worth having anymore anyway.

I'm concerned about my health now, after buying some software a few weeks ago. My wife says if I buy anymore I could possibly die from it.... :eek:
 
ARrrgHH! I guess im just a theif I refuse to spend money on things i cant really afford.Im not ashamed of down loading all that great software for free,because its not like im making profit off of it.
I JUST LIKE TO PLAY AND EXPERIMENT!! :rolleyes:

Hi, nice to meet you. There...now you do know somebody who doesn't own 1 illegal copy of a song. Why would I do that while wanting people to buy my music? Sinner? I won't make that judgement, but I know what a thief is. Now that legal downloads are widely available and affordable there is no excuse anymore.
