BIG congrats philbag welcome to the 1K side of life.
No cake for you

()

Now yeah if I was you I would use monitors dude.

()

I strongly urge that if you aren't willing to dish out for monitors to NOT!!!! use those 5.1 surrond things.

I made that mistake years ago.

At the veyr least get yourself set up with a decent set of bookshelf speakers until such a time you find that you want to fine tune your ear and your recordings. Then spring for some decent monitors.

I've been getting by with headphones and some bookshelf speakers. but

I'm shopping around for monitors now and it's bit taxing of trying to get the most bang for your buck.

Yup the yamaha 50 or rockets 5 can be found on e-bay cheap and are pretty good nearfield monitors.

whats yir budget AB?

Im looking at Tannoy Reveal 5A's...they get some glowing reviews

I think they'll be my next upgrade...Ill finally be on the foot of the ladder :D

This is something I've been thinking about lately.
When I first started into the whole homereccer thing, I mixed on earbuds and my laptop speakers. Then moved up to my roomate's computer with the slightly nicer piece of crap ten-year-old hand-me-down "hi-fi" speakers and amplifier. Spent a lot of time on those, pretty much had them learned (at least to the point where mixes were translating to my satisfaction), then started reading up on the importance of monitors.
Went ahead and bought some KRK rockit 5s because I could afford them at the time.
Was initially stunned at the increase in detail over my former monitoring chain...
until I took a mix to the car and realized they had their own quirks.
So I took a couple months learning them to the point where my mixes were translating as well as they had before.
I ended up, once I'd learn them, being able to get better mixes quicker than I had out of the roomate's speakers.
At this point I've got a pair of Yorkville YSM1ps which, while not a huge financial jump over the KRKs are just absolutely perfect for my needs.
I had a chance to hear and mix on them before I bought them and they just jumped out at me.
So it only took about a week after I'd bought them before I was going back and remixing things I'd done on the KRKs because I was hearing things in those mixes that were jumping out at me as just awful.
(I'm absolutely not shilling for the yorkvilles, just explaining my experience)
I'm certain I had a point...

Yeah.
I guess I'm agreeing with Atom Bomb's post.
Use what you have until you're absolutely certain you want and can afford an improvement in your monitoring chain.
But also, maybe hold off when you first start looking at monitors until you can afford a step above the giant selection of entry level "studio monitors."
And make sure have a way to really put what you're buying to the test before you lay your money down.
Lot's of retailers online have really liberal return policies, so take advantage.

And congrats to you Philbagg - keep up the excellent work/advice.

I thought there was cake? :(

I agree with KRK rokit 5's... Roughly $300, or probably less on ebay etc. They should be worth more IMO.

I think Rokit 5's are pretty weak. For sure they're better than computer speakers or headphones, and the price is decent, but that's a pretty small speaker. Save up for something with 8's.

I guess if your going to go for it - go for all the gusto and get what Greg has suggested ....something with beefy girth and balls.
That way you'll probably never have to up grade in the future.

()

And just to put some more dog breath in here....:D

It's possible that something with 8" speaks aren't gonna help ya a damn bit. Most people starting out have small, untreated rooms and the 8"s may give you an inflated sense of what's really goin on.

Personally, I'd stay with 6" unless you have a decent sized, treated room. ;)

(breaks out the air freshener upon leaving)

:D

I love my Event 20/20s. If they ever die on me I'll snag another pair from ebay.

lol @ phil babb :laughings:

I've been a Liverpool supporter since 1971. I remember him, we signed him from Coventry and he played for Eire. I used to call him 'Betty' {after this kids TV character Betty Babcock}. When you were referred to as Philbabb, I laughed and thought "Hah, Betty !" :D

I was talking to a mate of mine last night and he positively gushed over his Events. He's semi pro and is looking to step up. He buys and sells with aplomb and has samplers and other stuff going back to the industrial revolution :). He said to me of every thing he has ever bought, by far the best purchase and 'priceless for the pound' {that's our version of bang for the buck !} were his monitors. He's a night security man and had had a long shift but he came to life talking about his monitors. Billy Crystal would've said "I'll have whatever he's just had".

Then there is the *pow for the peso* but I've never seen a Mexican poster here on HR.

. Save up for something with 8's.
I'm with ya' on that.
If you're gonna spend the bucks go ahead and get something that has a little oomph to it.
And the point that 8's MIGHT inflate your idea of what's there is true, but 6's MIGHT understate what's there leading you to mix bass-heavy.

As soon as you say "might" then it becomes meaningless. A meteor 'might' land on your head killing you instantly. I wouldn't base any decisions on that possibility though.
