do overheads need to be "matched"?

i am thinking about new overheads to replace my mc 012's and i was wondering if they must be matched? the mics i have decided to go with are neumann km 184's. when buying higher end mics like this do they still have to be a matched pair or can i buy them one at a time as i get the cash??

The Neumann KM184s are nice mics. Neumann maintains their quality control is good enough that you don't need the mics matched. Some people suggest getting sequential serial numbers.

You might look at the CAD M179 for drum overhead use or even the Studio Projects C4. Both of these mics seem to excel in this area for lower priced mics.

I have a pair of MC012's amd a single KM184. The MC012's are good, but the KM184 is a more detailed mic. It'd be cool to have a pair of them!

Do you only need the mics for drum overheads?

the KM184 is a very warm microphone, so it will be really good for taming cymbals, but maybe a little too much? Im sure they will work great for somethings but not all things. I tried them on acoustic guitar against an AKG C414, and an AT4033. The KM184 was too warm for me on acoustic guitar compared to the other two. The C414 was in the middle, and the AT4033 being the brightest.

Since the C414 was in the middle it might be a better mic to get as a really good all around mic, but i dont know what your needs are.

The KM184's aren't matched pairs anymore, they are stereo pairs. Their shells have consecutive numbers.
