do mastering engineers really refuse to master without ISRC code?

i had a chat with a real pro engineer who's used to work on huge albums
and he told me that lots of mastering engineers out there refuse to master a cd if you don't give them an ISRC code (i hope im using the right code here),
or otherwise you gotto be close friends to the guy and talk him into it..

the conversation was pretty short, he did say that if you're doing underground stuff (like me) it might be a different story,
then you contact less big mastering suits and they might not care about it

so what about the people that have adds on this site?
massive mastering and stuff, do you guys often master amateur work thats recorded in home studios? stuff that only will sell like 200 or max 400 copies?

and is it you(the mastering engineer-) that sends the final premastered product to the mastering factory? or do you first send it back to Me ?

as far as i know you gotto have a record deal to get an isrc code, so this would mean that all "self published" cds are kinda illegal...or i mean...if u don't get a record deal you just can't distribute your cd since you won't find decent mastering...

or are these things myths?

thanks!

Hasn't this already been posted? I'm having major déja vu!

Heh, sorry, didn't mean to sound like I was chastizing you! I've been looking myself but I can't remember what topic it was under. If I find the thread I'll post a link.

ISRC codes aren't the M.E.'s responsibility. If the client supplies them, he puts them in. If not, they don't go in.

Not that I haven't had a few who "forgot" to send them in...
