DMP3 Noisy!

Okay, I picked up a DMP3 (based on favorable reviews from this place), but I've got some issues with it. My first unit had scratchy pots on both channels, and would make this terrible "whump/click" when I'd get near the completely open position...got the replacement today, and still one channel suffers the same issue as the previous unit. Also, this preamp seems generally noisy to begin with...even with the pots all the way down, there is pretty noticable hiss (about -60db on my host software meters), and with the pots all the way up the noise is unbearable (about -42db on the meters).

If I compare these noise levels to my Digimax LT, VTB-1, and internal preamps of my MOTU 828MkII, they are for all intents and purposes "dead silent"...even with the gain cranked on those units, noise levels never exceed roughly -70db.

Have I gotten two completely bad DMP3's, or is this thing just that noisy? If it's this noisy, then it's not staying.

Hit the Hi/Low Gain Range button, just to the right of the clip light, and that should take care of the noise. My guess is it's just running hot. It's a dead-quiet mic pre, though, under normal conditions, so this is unusual.

Not sure about those scratchy pots. You might have another lemon -- maybe try a different dealer next time? Sounds bizzare.

The "Hi/Lo Gain Range" switch does reduce the noise considerably, and is probably usable now, but now it seems the "Low Cut" switch flops the phase...very strange. When listening in headphones with the "Low Cut" out, and speaking into a mic, things seem fine...as soon as I engage the "Low Cut", the signal seems to go out of phase with the headphones, but flopping the phase of that channel on the DMP3 (while the "Low Cut" is engaged), it seems to come back into phase. I'm not sure why this would be. If I perform the same test on the VTB-1, the phase relation seems to stay the same.

Ideas?

BTW, I can't deal with the scratchy pot, so I'll have to exchange once again.

try the phase buttons on the back of the unti. my dmp3 is very quiet. who did you buy it from?

I did use the phase buttons on the back of the unit when I experimented with the "Low Cut". That's why I'm confused...why would the "Low Cut" cause the signal's phase to shift?

Bought it from a local dealer.

Sounds like you're having some bad luck with it. This is some pretty unusal stuff -- Your dealer probably got a bad batch. Weird.

I'm having my dealer order me a new one, and I'll report back when I get the new unit. Thanks for the support guys!
