DIY Synths (more info inside)

I'm looking for an analog synth kit that I can purchase and build that has midi input that I can use for melodic stuff. I really like the fatman but that's more of a bass instrument and the sawtooth only generator does limit its appeal...I will get one of those down the road. However, for now, is there anything comparable for an analog synth that's more melodic in nature?
