DIY Passive Studio Monitors?

Hi guys! Did anyone ever tried something like that?

I guess it should be a cool and super easy noob project - a pair of passive monitors...

Any resources, links or tips about it?

I did mine! Yeah, it's rather easy. Here are some of my ideas:


- the Seas Cygnet Kit from Madisound:

Maybe sub in some ribbon tweeters instead:

- Build your own MixCube-type monitor from Fostex full-range drivers:

- Or the Seas LOKI kit:

My mains use Seas drivers, but not those parts; I used a 10" woofer in a 70L (yeah!) sealed box, with a 1" metal dome tweeter. I am going to add ribbon tweeters and make them switchable as soon as I get the cash :o

I also have a Fostex 4.5" full-range driver project going; I'm going to post details when all finished. I will be comparing various vent solutions using PartsX's small finished cabs.

If you can do your own woodworking, you can save tons of money and get very, very good monitors for cheap. I can't, so I buy the finished cabs, and I hired a carpenter to build my giant mains boxes out of MDF.

I can route the holes though . . . :o

My dad is a carpenter, so woodwork is not a problem...

Sealed boxes are a lot easier to build than ported boxes. If you need them to be ported it might be just simpler to buy monitors. There is a lot of mathematics and trial and error in building ported boxes unless its a kit.

I would highly recommend building a kit or following someone else's design that has been previously tested and measured. Especially for something as critical as monitors, it's hard to get a speaker design right without a lot of experience.

I can do my own woodworking where do you go abouts building very very good monitors for cheap?
