Excellent work! I like the idea of "iron on" trim. If I had that much rack gear, I'd be all over this one.

Quick question - I'm going to have to order 2 for a single-bay console, correct? ...(Ordering off of musiciansfriend, so I'm assuming I'll need to buy 2 14u's, but they don't say whether they come in pairs or not...)

...And do the Sweetwater ones come in pairs, or would I need to order two of those also... ?

You do need 2 for a single bay rack, one for each side. The ones I bought came in pairs...straight from the description on Sweetwaters site:

"Measuring 1/8" thick, MAP's all-steel RRF rackrail is threaded for 10-32 screws. With full hole spacing, they are sold in pairs and designed for use with 19.8" wide rough openings. Durable black e-coat finish, cutting service available."

Don't know about musicians friend...you could always call and ask them.

Mine is not as "finished" per se but can be done for about $80.

You guys have inspired me to tackle these things myself.

Did you buy the tops with laminate on them or do that as well?

I need a triple rack (like frederics) and a center console with a iso chamber underneath for my computer. I possibly want to embed my dual 17 inch monitors more into the console top so I can see over them easier and so that the wont be in the way of the speakers dispersal.

Thanks for ideas! Did you guys have dimensioned plans or did you just wing it?

Well, it's 2 of the same monitor set up in a 'dual monitor' fashion. The ones I got are Samsungs, and are here: Monitors

I actually got them from Newegg, but they don't have them on their site right now. I can tell you that these things put off a great picture, and were worth every dime!

I've been searching like crazy for a set of plans for how to construct a console armrest. Anyone know how to shape the front end of the desk and attach the foam rubber and leather?

Man, you are bringing back memories! In college, I had access to some impressive wood-working/cabinetry making tools. I was not into home studio gear at all at the time, but I did use the 19-inch standard width. Made an audio rack, a TV stand/rack (I figured the biggest TV I would EVER own would be about 32 inches diag. screen! ), and a computer desk to house my... Commodore 64! They were very well made, true pieces of quality furniture, but unfortunately, I have none of them anymore.

My only problem was staining over the wood filler I used to cover the nail holes, the stain didn't really cover that at all. I need to figure something out for the next time. I'll be sure to put pics up of the desk when I build it, but it could be awhile since I haven't even started designing it yet.

Build it, stain it, seal it, then use Minwax wood filler pencils (basically they're crayons with wood colors) to fill the holes. Can use several colors to blend and perfect the color matching. I have a full set of their filler pencils from when we installed all oak doors in my brother's house. We have everyone that come over try to find our nail and screw holes in the frames. They can't.

For some reason, I am only seeing this thread now, but I gotta say, I am stuck by how much that rack resembles one I built in 1984. I had access to a complete shop of woodworking tools, and built an audio rack, a TV stand, and a computer desk. All made with poplar end pieces and lumber-core plywood. Over the next two decades, I lost all three pieces, a sad story I do not want to go into details.
