Actually it sounds great as long as you don't jack the master volume and gain to high. I saw a few people set up their Marshals that way and it always sounds cool, so I tried it with the L6 and ti worked pretty well!

LOL! The Line 6 Spyder amps sound great as long as you are hopped up on enough PCP to bring down a bull elephant.

The insane setting with the preamps over 5 is, well...insane.

I don't mind the preset, but you can take it way too far and end up with a hollow sounding bag of bees.

i think i'm going to try micing it with two mics..all i have is a sm57 and a audix i5..but when i place the mic a little above the speaker it gets real dull and bassy..sounds like a big phase problem..but im going to try a few things and ill post some samples up later today.

Those two mics are perfect together. Try doing it in the X-Y stereo

Read and listen to THIS. Pay attention to what Slippy says. He knows what he is talking about. MOST of what you can learn from him will not involve buying any new gear, but gaining new knowledge, and learning new technique.

You do NOT need new preamps, EQ's, compressors, or any other new gear YET. You need to learn what to do with what you have FIRST, and then you can worry about what new gear you WANT.

Well, OK, I didn't see that one. All I really did was speed read through it and see a bunch of "You need a new preamp" bullshit. I haven't even listened to the posted samples, because I am a firm believer that you can judge exactly NOTHING by listening to MP3's, so why bother? Besides, if someone wants to know more about recording distroted guitars, Slippy's thread is the best answer avalible, because it has just about everything you could even want to know.

Back to what this thread is really about:

Comparing the 2 samples, they both sound very diffrent, but yes, I prefer the second one. But after being able to acess some good tube amps (70's marshal half stack/fender deville), I can finaly agree that while they don't deliver the true sound of a guitar, they distort it in such a perfect way (nonlinear i assume, so technicaly not perfect) that can not be exactly coppied by effects.

I agree, slippy's article should be required reading. I was lucky enough to discover it in my recording infancy and helped an amazing amount, now guitars are usually the least of my problems.
