Delay when using CuBase + mixer?

The Setup:

CuBase 3.7 VST w/ Steinberg ST24/96 Soundcard
Pentium II 400 w/ 196 MB RAM, 20 gig HD (may up this later)
M-Audio StudioPhile SP-5B Monitors
Behringer Eurorack MX1604A 16-Channel Mixer

The Main Outs on the mixer run to the to Monitors
The Alt 3-4 Bus on the mixer runs to Soundcard In
Soundcard out runs back into Channels 1 & 2 on the mixer

The Problem:

I am getting a huge delay between the microphone and CuBase when I record. There’s about a quarter-second delay between when I speak into the mic, and seeing the response on the screen monitor. And because of this, I can’t record one track on top of an earlier one, because the headphone playback of Track 1 is always a step ahead of whatever I’m recording on Track 2. I hope I’m being clear. Anyone know how to fix this?

Had the same problem with my DMan 2044 card....turns out I was using the generic ASIO Multimedia driver instead of the ASIO driver written specifically for my card. The names were so similar that I didn't notice the difference. Go to Audio-System-and make sure you're using the ASIO driver for your card. Get the latest driver from the Steinberg website. Some tweaking of the buffer settings in the ASIO Control Panel may help too...
