Newbie here, getting my butt kicked mixing my first "real" recording.

I have decided I need to get a book to learn the tricks of the trade.

Suggestions as to the best book on mixing would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is one definitive "magic bullet" guide. But two good ones are Mixing Secrets by Mike Senior and Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki.

This. And that's just for starters.

If you want a 3D visualization of how a sound image is built, The Art of Mixing by David Gibson is a good one.

If you want tips from real pro engineers, read The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski.

Even if you're not using a portastudio, there's plenty of good advice in Using Your Portable Studio by Peter McIan.

THIS thread has just about every book written on the subject and more.

Have you read that Alan? I've got a copy and I read it a few years back but it all got a bit esoteric for me. Perhaps I should pull it out and have another look/listen!

Not the whole book, but I read his articles in Audio Technology magazine every month, everything I have read makes sense to me, I have also tried out a lot of the ideas that he has and had great results (with some of them as it depends on personal taste of course).

Alan.

Cool. I'll haul it out again and have a read. Possibly I didn't have enough knowledge/experience first time round to appreciate what he was saying...

You got some good suggestions for books that describe the artistic aspect of mixing. If you're looking for an education on the nuts and bolts, and the science of how audio gear works, allow me to plug my own book The Audio Expert. It also includes many tips and much practical advice about mixing and how to achieve specific sounds and effects.

Stick to it you actually taking the first step now by reading a book all the mistakes in the past do not count.

"Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio"
LOVE that one.

This is a good book. Many good resources available with the book. Free tracks to download and mix. Many good suggestions for setting up your studio, and the process. I'm re-reading chapter 8 right now.
