Hello from West Virginia. I’m new here, been playing/performing for fifty or so years. We’ve done some studio recordings years ago, and are finally going to start home recording.
There is a boatload of info here for me to read and learn, and I’ve begun going through it.
I love reading, and would like some suggestions for books on home recording, and for a good magazine (Guitar Player type) subscription to add.
Currently using a Tascam DP 32SD, and a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th gen. into my Apple iMac.

Will try to keep my newbie questions to a bare minimum.

Hi Steve and welcome. The above gives the Tascam recorder a good reccy. Not the 32SD but similar?
Since you want to read about recording, Sound on Sound is a mine of information going back decades. Much of the stuff is free to view but you could of course subscribe, online or paper copy or both! In there you will also find many reviews of books on the subject.

I would not worry to much about asking questions! The forum is not exactly busy these days and as they say "use it or lose it"!

Dave.

A lot of print magazine have disappeared from the shelves. There are some archives available online at places like https://www.muzines.co.uk/mags. The equipment reviews will be dated (reviews of then new cassette decks, etc) but the techniques and interviews are still valid today.

There are lots of channels on Youtube covering recording. Warren Huart's Produce Like A Pro covers just about everything from equipment reviews to techniques, visits to working studios, and interviews. He has a few thousand videos on his channel.

"A lot of print magazine have disappeared from the shelves." Yes indeed Rich and even SoS is not immune it seems? A discussion about it recently in their forum. Not likely to go anytime soon but peeps should be aware. "Buy it or lose it" to paraphrase.

I have a huge pile of SoS mags that I would love to have go to an interested party. I want nothing for them but am not paying postage!

Dave.

Thanks for the replies folks. Will look into all the suggestions!

I also like Joe Gilder and Rick Beato on some of the basics of recording on YouTube. I have a couple of books that predate home recording on computers that give the basics of analogue recording which are still surprising relevant. I am sure they are out of print by now.

To get started, Home Recording For Dummies.

I referenced this book many years ago, it isn't advanced and won't make you sound like a pro, but it is very fundamental and will get you recording at a very good level in 30ish days. It beats hunting around this site and the internet for a bunch of fragmented information. Once you get through the book and start recording, then this site will get you to the next level.

If you search hard and long enough it's possible to locate and purchase "out of print books and old magazines up for sale" at ebay and other websites.
