Hello again lovely people.

I have some major lag issues. My DAW, for the past # months, has been lagging horribly. Basically, after x amount of time, the program will freeze for about 8 - 10 seconds even when nothing is playing. I don't think this is a set up issue; the problem began when I was just using a computer mic to record.

Any advice, or specifications I should address? This is really hurting my love for making music; help would be greatly appreciated.

Not enough info.

Hardware??? Software??? OS??? RAM??? HD capacity/speed???

Can't address spec issues if nobody knows any specs.

yeah, that's why I asked; didn't know what I needed to specify.

I'm using an eMachines El1200 with Windows XP Home Edition 2002 and a AMD Athlon Processor 2650.
1.61 GHz, 896 Mb of RAM; 31.8 Gb of free space on the hard disk

My DAW is Ableton Live 7, and I'm running a sp-555 and a sm57 (usb attatchment) into the back of the tower.

Don't know if i left out anything, I'm not really knowledgeable with this kind of stuff.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of the lag without upgrading something?

Probably not.

Your computer is ancient, you need more RAM and a faster CPU to avoid latency.

I just find it strange how there wasn't an issue originally; I was able to use my setup for like a year before this started happening. I think I can adjust the input and output latency within my DAW. Something to do with a buffer rate, i don't really know.

Try cleaning your hard drive and defrag. Clear your cookies and temp internet files. Turn off anti-virus programs and all other apps when recording. Sounds like you are using the built-in soundcard so ASIO drivers are probably out of the question. Buffers and reducing sampling rate may help, but your computer barely meets the minimum specs to run Ableton7. If you want to use plug-ins or playback multiple tracks worth of samples you are going to have problems.

Ableton 7 system reqs.

1.5 GHz CPU or faster
512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
Windows XP or Windows Vista
Windows compatible sound card (ASIO driver support recommended)
Quicktime 6.5 or higher recommended
DVD-ROM drive

I'll try some of your suggestions out and see if performance improves, though getting a new computer seems more practical at this point.

thanks for the help.
