I ran out of weed very early in this process,

Oof... well, for what it's worth I never would have known had you not mentioned it.

... the solo guitar and the rhythm guitar sound like they're in different spaces - the rhythm's way forward, and the solo's way back. In terms of everything that's happening in the whole mix, it's the rhythm guitar that sounds out of context, so... dunno, but the first thing I'd try on it is some reverb on the rhythm guitar.

Yeah I agonized a little over that rhythm guitar track... I wasn't crazy about the tone and didn't think it sounded enough "like Bob". I even re-tracked it, but my second take was too close to heat's lead sonically and the two guits kinda stepped on each other, so we ended up just using the first take.... As it is, the recording is just so much cleaner than most live Dead recordings (just by virtue of being recorded on modern equipment) that I figure any minor mix issues just make it a little more authentic sounding (?) :o

Excellent work, heatmiser! You guys should make a CD of Greatful Dead and Pink Floyd tracks from the late 60s and early 70s along with some of your original songs. Good stuff, and an outstanding CD-ready mix to my ears. It's obvious you guys put a lot of time into it the project.

Cheers,
Joseph

It made me want to drop some acid and smoke some doobies :p

Mission accomplished!

Of course you quit, so, uh....

Thanks Joseph. That's very nice of you to say.

I would say that a lot of time passed working on the project, but most of it was spent corresponding about ideas and stuff. It seemed like, whenever we needed a track, fat_fleet would produce in record time. Pretty amazing really.

yes yes, that is exactly what you must do...

...then kill your parents and drop out of school.

you must follow fleetmiser....follow fleetmiser......follow........

Well done. I can hear the kick drum in headphones but it's not all there - seems to depend on the dynamics of the playing when recorded that being so it sounds authentic.
I'm def. not a Deadhead. I tried, I bought, listened and read but I can't get them into my consciousness.
the soundclick edit is pretty nasty. pPost a 320 in DBox so I can hear the end, my friend.
Good playing & mixing - I'd prefer the vox back a little as well.
I can admit to being a Lesh fan at least - well of his largess regarding non mainstream music anyway.

Hey ray - here's a 320 mp3 dropbox link for you and anyone else who might be interested:

I'd add it up top but it's too late for me to edit now.

Sorry about the dead thing. I know I encouraged you to buy live dead years ago and I'm sorry to hear it didn't catch on. Definitely not for everyone.

Lots of votes for lower vocals and some other interesting ideas...I still may mix this again at some point.

Downloading the 320 now - I'll keep it f that's OK with you.
It's a good example of recording & mixing and I may get the Dead through an alternate route.

New Mix!!!

I took the liberty and put it there for you. I hope you don't mind.

Awesome. Thanks former mod who magically retains your powers only to be used for good.

Hold your horses there ray...there's a new mix - finally.

I had some time this afternoon and remixed this with all of the suggestions in this thread in mind:

* lowered lead vocals
* raised kick and bass region
* tamed harshness on feedback
* raised guiro
* added more verb to rhythm guitar
* did tons of other minor adjustments not worth mentioning as they're most like inaudible to all but me and perhaps fat_fleet.

If anyone would care to give it another spin, or pehaps just scroll through some sections and check - you may find an improved mix, or you may say to yourself, "sounds like the same crap to me"...I dunno. I think it's better for all of the input here. Thanks.:)

Also...not to be outdone by Obi-Wan, I assembled my collection of GD bootleg tapes, CDs and LPs earlier today:

Many years ago I used to devote a fair amount of time on paint shop pro making bootleg CD covers. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Downloaded the newest mix and am listening as I type.
I think the guiro's a little loud but they are really hard to place in a mix - I've tried unsuccessfully a few times.
Vox level MUCH cooler.
Good stuff gentlemen.

Damn that guiro! Hard to place is right...I may've spent more time fiddling with that one instrument than any other :confused:. I definitely wanted it louder, but...

Thanks again ray. :)

I'm pretty sure they timed China Cat/Rider so they'd be singing "I wish I were a headlight on a northbound train" while the freight train went by next to the fairgrounds. Of course it could have been '85 during Terrapin or Big Railroad. Or Smokestack Lightning.

Cool. Were you at those shows? I think I have at least one set from there in '85 too. Sadly, I didn't start seeing them until '85. That 3/31/85 show was my first.

Yeah, I thought the guiro was a little loud also. I'm wondering if reshaping the EQ might help. I don't know the freq range, but make it 'darker'; less high freq's and maybe it won't stand out so much.

Rats. I did do some of that actually. I rolled off a lot of 4k+ content but may not have done enough...I hate the fact that this one thing is throwing it off! Thanks for checking though Chili. I'll see what FF thinks...

I'm not familiar with GD at all, so I've no reference. The song definitely has some cool spacey moments that harken me back to the 70's :D

I was there for the '84 and '85 shows. First one was Pauley Pavilion 1980. Probably the most memorable and iconic show was NYE 1982, complete with Bill Graham in some costume (Father Time? It was different each year.) up on a disguised lift slowly rolling through the Oakland Auditorium throwing handfuls of party favors to the crowd. Tower of Power joined the band for a set during which Etta James came up and sang half a dozen songs to the dazed hippies.

Last mix???

Thanks for checking it out ido!

Nice. Not sure I've heard that show, although the Etta James thing is kind of familiar. I remember one NYE (closing of winterland 1978?) where Bill famously descended upon the crowd riding on a giant doobie. I'm envious that you caught some of the early eighties. In retrospect, I think I really caught them on the downside...my first show was probably the best one musically that I saw. Oxford Plains in 1988 was tremendous fun though, and quite a memorable scene.

Ok, I did whip up one (last?) mix this afternoon. It should be the same as the previous one, but with the guiro tamed a little bit more. I swear I'm going to be hearing that thing in my sleep now! The spacey part is always going to be a little different as I didn't automate anything, so the fader riding is always slightly different. Hopefully this mix is a good compromise of all of the feedback here. Thanks!
