Thanks for taking the time, I need to learn from the more experienced ones. You know the one's in that "SPECIAL CLUB" that some seem to think exists here. LOL

I'm not in the "Special Club" yet but I would like to know what you think the problem is with the mix. The problem I heard had nothin to do with the mix. I thought the song just stayed on the same note for the entire time. The bass line and the drums don't move around at all really. Was the bass and drum a loop? I do think this "Jam" would fit into another tune as the outtro or something.

hey charva, I was just kidding about the club thing, someone was accusing others of playing favorites the other day. It was funny. Everyone here has been very nice and helpfull. Yes, drums were a loop, Bass line was a sampled bass played on keys. Guitars were real. Yea, I realize its boring and monotonous. I am not really trying to write songs yet, just trying to create some sounds so I can learn the skill of recording, mixing and proper EQ'ing. I am still fighting my system, and until i get it worked out I am just playing around. I really want to be able to just sit down and go when I DO have some inspiration, instead of jacking with levels and crap for two hours, and then your like "Screw it" anyhow. I seem to get a strong lean towards one frequency area, like MIDS in this instance. On my system, it sounds very high mids to Brittle sounding.

Thanks for taking the time.

What programs are you using for recording and mixing and the like? I have been using Cakewalk PA 9 for recording tracks. Then I'll take the tracks and convert them to a WAV file. Then I take the WAV into Cool Edit Pro and EQ and add effects and such. Then they go back into cakewalk for mixdown. Then I once again take that mixdown again into CEP for another round of EQ and cleanup. It seems that I actually play the insturments for 10% and the mixing and editing takes 90% of the time it takes to finish one tune. I've only been at this home recording thing for about a year and although I would like to think I have finished a song, they never really seem finished in my mind.

check out the crap I've done so far at....

Hey man....the mix is fine......

you do need to expand on those loops though.....you could easily make a full tune out of this with some added musical changes.....
and some vox.....

I really dug the build at 3:00.....very cool man.....

Rock on man,
Joe

I do it all in cool edit Pro 2.0

I really need to get something else to use for percussion besides loops and samples. I play drums and have a kit but dont have the equipment for miking them. Maybe in the future. I hear guys talking about fruity loops and how great it is ? I dont have alot of patience for programming midi parts. If you got any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Hi Brian,
Why don't you use one or 2 mics and record the drums in layers?

that's how I do my guitar parts....
works for me...ya know?

and if you need real bass just PM me...OK?
I use Cool Edit as well....

Take it easy man...

Joe

P.S.
You can check out my bass sound

gonna break my rusty CAAAAGE!!!

... and RUN!!

A little loose in the intro w/guitar, but very reminded of Soundgarden...

Snare sounds a bit too "snappy"... are you boosting/shelving the highs? Could use some more THUD (are you rolling it off above 400? Try something like 250...) Nice room sound on it, tho...

Bass is ghostly... fairly nice, maybe a bit too fuzzy... a rounder sound would sit better, possibly...

Cymbals sound good...

Could you pan the guits a bit wider? And take them down in volume relative to the rest of the tracks? Either that or raise all others up around them? IMO this would help make the mix a bit fuller... seems like all we're hearing now is the guitar distortion... Maybe a touch of compression on 'em? Or, a touch more? Go for some gain reduction...

A vocal line would add some 500-1k and fill out the arrangement some more, for sure...

IMO this is just a matter of level setting (well, about 90% of it) and a tiny bit of EQ and panning... the guits are hogging everything up... take 'em down about 2.5db a pc and raise the master fader, or raise everything else up around it and IMO you'd be much closer.

WAAAY too loopy, no feel. Practice and play the parts, if it's too boring to play how will people enjoy listening to it? No vocal work could save it from monotony in my opinion.

Maybe wrong forum?

Yes, I realize its loopy. I was just laying down some parts to try to work on mixing and EQ.

(From previous reply)

I am starting to understand that you are going to get critiqued on your songwriting abilities even if you do not want it. I may pull it off just to spare the hassle.

Seriously though, thanks for taking the time to listen. I do appreciate it.

If there is a better forum then let me know.
