Criticize Recording & Mix of the song 'Reza'

Sounds good, I really like the song- there are places where the vocal performance could be fine tuned. I really like the bass line, but the bass sound itself is a little fuzzy, especially right at the beginning.

The song also sounds very mono. The drums seems to have some space (it might just be a reverb or room sound), but everything else sounds dead center. I want to hear those guitars doubled and panned to either side. That will open up the mix quite a bit.

I think that you are picking up a buzz in both your bass and your distorted guitars- you can hear it really well at the end of the song. I get that buzz, too, when my guitar or bass is too close to the computer monitor, the amp, or the monitor amplifier. The buzz is really noticeable in parts of the song.

I like the doubled vocals on the verse a lot.

Good stuff!

as you state, you're using sub-par equipment..so the fideltiy reflects that as well.

During the verses, it sounds like most of the performances are done ok...but the "feel" is not there. the lead vocal sounds very uninspired, and the matching background vocal as well. The chorus's are better, but the "thrash" sound becomes overwhelming. The guitar solo is decent, good note choice, but it sounds like a "learned" solo, and not really coming from the heart...kinda like the rest of the performances. Give the tune some personal touch. A tad buzzy at the end, but I was trying to stay away from fidelity issues.

Will turning OFF the computer monitor while recording help?

Or do I have to record AWAY from any electronic eqipment?

Yes...just try turning off the computer. The bass player in my band gets a horible buzz through when he is next to one.

Turning off the monitor on the comp will help alot. If you can't, then get away from it. Ten feet or so should do the trick.

I liked the vocal presence alot. The cold stop at around 1:40 was a tight touch. You're gettting tons of sound out of what you claim to be low end equipment.

Nice mixing and arrangment.

Recording details...

4 Mics where used to record the drums, 2 Shure 14L, and 2 Shure 58(something). One was placed over the snare, and other inside the kick drum (without touching it, just suspended inside by a stand). The other two microphones where used as ambients, 6 feet in height, recording the general drum sound at each side of it. The recording was made on the drummer bedroom, just a regular room, with concrete walls, like a 12' x 12' bedroom. We just used some couch cushions and a pair of matress on the walls, a lot of echo, therefore the natural REVERB.

We used a power mixer MACIE of 6 chanels as mixer, and a 4track Sony minidisk to record the drums. Then we put these 4 channels on 4 diferent tracks in the Sonar program (software).

We used the power mixer and plugged directly to the sound card (without the use of the amplifier) to record the bass. He recorded while hearing the drums. I nottice then the computer monitor noise effect getting inside the bass sound, but I said "What the Heck!" dindn't though it was that important.

We recorded the guitars micking the amplifiers. The amplifier itself was inside a closet filled with clothes, and the sound I though it was OK, anyway I also noticed the monitor noise. The vocals where recorded the same way as the guitars, thats all.

To EQualize and adding some efects I used the program Sound Forge.

What do you think I can do, with that equipment, to make a better recording? Besides turning OFF the monitor :)

Hi..

Listening..

There are some pretty aggressive sibilants... I guess that's due to the microphones. Very cool bass-sound in the beginning (and throughout the song)

It's a really nice performance.. no doubt you guys can play. I like the song.. in fact, it's among the coolest songs I've ever heard in the clinic. Nice rythm, good melodies, extremely cool drummer.

It has its' sonic drawbacks, but it's also a 'sound'..

Keep on recording and experimenting with stuff. I'll listen to anything you post in the future aswell..

(pushing play for the second time...) :)

Yeah I like the drummer's style alot too. And though I know no Spanish I think I like what the vocalist is trying to do. Keep building your sound capabilities, y'all can play that's fo' sho'

Well, if you want to hear more songs from us, you can go by http://www.mp3.com/polvo_pr There are 4 more songs there.

But let me warn all of you, that was our very first recording, we just pluged all to the mixer hit record, and joined all together. It is a mess, very low quality... but at least will give you and idea on our style. We are in the process of re-record them.

Thanks for the support.
