Cool edit users? Help!

Hey there, does anybody out there still use Cool Edit Pro?

We're using it for some home recording of a band (on a PC, using the internal soundcard), and it seems to skip, or lag a little bit while laying down a new track. Sometimes it will do it on playback too, but it often does while recording. This causes the rest of the track (after that point) to be displaced by a few milliseconds, just enough to sound like complete CRAP! Does anybody have any suggestions?

Whats your system specs?

Could be a hardware problem like processor too slow or DMA not enabled on hard drive. Or could be latency on soundcard.

How many tracks are you recording at once?
 
When I first started using CEP, I was running it on a PIII 450 mhz with 64mb RAM and also using the onboard soundcard. It really sucked. had all the same problems you stated above. I have since upgraded to a P4 3.2ghz with 1gig of RAM and a Terratec EWS88/MT soundcard and it works like a charm.
 
Tukkis hit on some good places to start. scan and defrag your harddisc may help, shut your computer down and restart it after this is done to re-initialize your hd's allocation table. If you are running windows xp I suggest turning off auto update and make sure windows messenger is not running. If you have bundles of programs open in the lower right hand section of your task bar decide what you need to be protected and turn off things you do not need. Clock, soundcard ie little speaker or mixer, virus, task manager, or firewall if you are on a always on connection are needed. Some programs will poll your system state thus creating an unwanted jitter in your recording while they are accessing the hardrive especially if you are running an older processor. You may also want to check your system for ad-ware/spyware as these programs are famous for system state polling especially for connectivity. There are many free ones to check and remidy this. Lastly check your program settings, buffer size, devices, go through the help file do not change everything at once stick with one change at a time run a test long enough to check the change.

You didnt say what you are using in the way of a soundcard but I had the same problem when I was using the onboard soundcard in my PC. Stepped up to the Delta 1010LT and all those problems went away.
