Hi frederic, thats cool, I can see what your doin. Now, the Akai is the remote, is that right? Does this have the built in HD recorder?(haven't read all the stuff on the link yet) And you
The Akai Dl1500, which goes on teh console table, is the remote control for all of the akai recorders I have. it can manage the two DR8's 8-ch hard disk recorders, the four DR16's 16-ch recorders, the DD1000 digital dubber 4-track, and provides SMPTE timing to and from the emagic midi interfaces daisychained off the PC, and RS422 position information as well as stop, play, ff, rw, etc to any RS422 devices of which I have none at this very moment in time.
The DD1000 uses 5.25" magneto-optical media to record 4 tracks, I have used this more or less as a mixdown device, then dump off that to cassette since it has nice burr brown D/A converters. It collected dust recently because I generally mix down to stereo, through s/pdif tto the PC for burning to a CD.
The DR16's and DR8's are the recorders, and I have an external hot-swap rackmount cabinet I put together that gives one drive per recorder, and I have a pallet of 2gig SCA drives in the garage which are going to be the per-project medium I record on.
have a couple of others too, right. They must be rack mounts huh? But the remote controls all of them, right? Man, I gotta check into these. They are exactly what I want. I just
The DL1500 is rack mount, though mounting it in a true rack is awkward - you'd want it more horizontal so you can see the face of the doghouse with the display information.
All of the recorders are rackmount, and will be in the producer's racks in front of the vocal booth. Whats neat, is this configuration only requires me to run lightpipe cables for audio in and out, and one 75 ohm ethernet (thinnet) cable from the remote to the rack of recorders, and everything works together. Thats less TRS snakes to solder right there.
have to wait and work for a while. How do these compare with the straight PC recording route?
All this stuff is discontinued for a while now, so buying used/ebay is your only real option. I like external recorders, I happen to really like the akai layout and operation, but thats just me. Been using them for years so I'm comfortable with them, dispite their flaws, usually relating to sync and timing, a problem which goes away when the DL1500 is thrown into the wiring scheme. I've been looking for a DL1500 for about three years now, and snagged one a few months ago on ebay. Next, is an Akai RC15 remote, which offers play, stop, FF, RW, Record, and Pause and has a really long cable, and attaches to the DL1500, so those buttons can be located just about anywhere. Allows me to sit back from the console, put the remote (RC15) on my lap, and stop, rewind, record, etc with a guitar on my lap. This should result in less banging the guitar/bass headstock on the console.
Of course, finding a used RC15 is like finding a lefthanded smoke shifter.
I don't like recording multitrack recordings on the PC, because I consider windows to be unreliable and irritating. When I got the first Motu2408 MKI I did get some nice tracks down on the PC, but then winME blew up and I lost everything. So, the Motu (and three additional ebay purchases) became demoted to format converters (TDIF to lightpipe) and that is that. I like external gear, I like touching buttons, knobs and things, and I hate windows and software.
damn system anymore. AARRRRRRGGGRR!! These electronic companys are really fucking bastards. Especially Lexicon. I sent them an email tellin em off, and got a nasty email back. I told them the CEO could shove it where the sun don't
They all do that. This is why I hate the music equipment manufacturing industry as a default rule. Once in a while a good vendor comes into play, like JC Cooper. I called them a year ago about a 10 year old cuepoint I suddenly couldn't get to arm tracks anymore, and they spent a good 20 minutes on the phone explaining to this dense monkey how to set it to handle 32 tracks. So, kudo's to them for taking the time and being really nice about it, even though it was obvious to me after the call i was just being dense.
Excuse me frederic, but when so many people spend their hard earned money on these manufacturers bullshit, and then they drop it, they piss me off. Well, talk about drivvel. There I go again, bla bla bla. Later.
Like (cough) Tascam (cough).
