Ok Guys, (Ghost, Reel, Herm...Anyone.)

A couple of dumb questions about testing my signal flow(Please):

1. Can I JUST engage 1 and Input on the 38 to test a signal (Move the 38's VU's) coming from my 312>through 2 DX-4D's OR do I have to engage the Record on the 38 with a tape threaded to check it?? (Please explain.)

2. Do the (DX-4D) DBX/BYPASS lights ONLY come on when the transport is engaged?

3. Does it sound like I failed at (Cable) signal flow 101, or am I just not engaging the right functions?

Thank You

LETS GO CUBS!
:)

By putting the 38 in input mode, you should be seeing what ever is feeding the various channels that you are sending signals on, in the mixer.

So, If you are generating a sound on the mixer, feeding that to the four busses by pressing all 1,2,3,4 buttons and have the meters on the mixer moving, the signal should also be showing up on the 38, assuming you wired it properly.

The dbx light should be lit if the following three conditions are met.

1- the power is plugged in and the power is on.

2- The dbx control signal cables are plugged in properly with the first unit's control signal cable plugged into the back of the 38's control jack for the DX-D4 and the second dbx unit's control signal cable is plugged into the cascade connector on the back of the first dbx unit.

3- That all 8 channel buttons are pressed in and engaged on the DX-D4's.

Good luck! :)

Okay thanks Ghost.

I must have done something wrong, but that doesn't surprise me.

Lets go Cubs!
:)

Almost there sorta... I have my 1-5 screwed up.
LOL I brought up channel one and 4 & 8 were moving on my 38 without having the Input engaged! LOL (I'm confused, but I'll get it right somehow...I hope!)

So is it like 1 on Dbx unit A, THEN Input 1 on Dbx unit B = 5??

Like do the 38 VU's operate in pairs, but only only go to the Input engaged channel?

I've got a fever and a Cubs win is the cure!
:)

P.S. " I don't ever want to TRY to hook up a huge console and machine!!"

The VU's might appear to operate in pairs because you are duplicating the same signal on the mixer's 4 main busses. so, if you are feeding a signal to channel one, it should also show up on channel five. That is normal for a four buss mixer.

As far as the input mode goes, it allows you to see on the meters what is being fed to the 38 without tape rolling or even being loaded.

Does your dbx units light up properly now?

If in doubt, recheck your wiring against the diagram in the 38's manual. Follow it religiously and you won't go wrong! (hopefully!)

Cheers! :)

Yeah, I didn't have the dbx pluged all the way into the 38 socket (had to give it a little push, then no problem there.), BUT I'm still in the dark or have confused myself with the 1-5 thing because the diagram doesn't show like if 1 on the second dbx is in fact 5.
I wanna say it is and I'm gonna try again now.

I had a weird out earlier!

I had this plastic case that tools came in (Like molded to fit the tools), but I lost the tools years ago, so I decided to cut out the molded bottom tray of the case as it will now be perfect for like 8 Boss sized stomp boxes or something else (Who knows?)
So anyway, I cut the bottom out and found this crazy Ludwig speed drum key that I have never seen in my life!!

(Okay I'm off to get this hooked up right or cry tryin'.

CUBS
:)

FINALLY!

Whew!

(Man it just doesn't pay to be stupid....,Well if it DOES pay, then I hope it's by the hour! LOL)

GO CUBS
:)

So, everything is working correctly now?

I am glad to read that one!!

So......any more questions........................he asked?

:D

LOL I feel more like it's my thanks giving (Giving thanks for all the help from you and the other guys.) I didn't check out the tape returns yet, but I'm sure I got it now...

I have to score a J station, a rack, a condensor mic and some new monitors, then I'll be set for awhile, but for now I'm good to go, so sorry, no.... Now the REAL questions begin! (Insert sinister laugh)

Dibs on the wish bone!
:)

Well day one of recording was pretty experimental and seeing how the tape returns work which was cool, but I really didn't get anything done... It was kind of weird trying to stripe a track with my sync tone because everything is so much bigger and spread out now compared to my Porta Two! (LOL) (Glad I've got the remote!) I'm torn between individual drum tracks (3 total) or just a two track straight drum part non squenced.

Should I be using a Direct Box in between my keyboard and the mixer or are the Line Inputs fine??

I'm for sure gonna need some monitors to mix down!

Over all I was pretty uninspired by the song I'm starting, but it'll happen.

GO GO GOOOOO CUBS!!!
:)

Hi Billy,

I am glad to see that you have progressed to the experimental recording phase of your studios development!

A keyboard generally doesn't need a direct box because the impedance is a close enough match to work with the line in connections on the board directly. At least that's how I use mine.

I have been goofing around with a trial version recording program for my computer here today and am I ever glad that I have my real studio upstairs to work with!

I was so pissed off with working with menus and cryptically marked buttons and functions that I could feel the steam boiling inside me to try and do even the most simple things.

After 2 hours of working on a simple blues structure loop for our collaboration project I discovered I hadn't saved the files properly and lost the entire song!

I don't know how the digi-kids work with this shit and not have a stroke?

Anyway, I will stop venting now and encourage you to go on, on your path and keep us up to speed on your project.

Cheers! :)

Titles:

"Digital Thanksgiving" or Digital Thanksgiving Blues" ???

LOL I like 'Digital Thanksgiving' .

Man I've programed my sequencer for hours and hours only to either pull the plug on accident or have the guys working in the building kill the power and losing it all too...
I didn't know if I should scream, cry or both!

I have a cool 4 track program you can down load if you'd like..
It's at DigitalPlanet.com and called 'Quartz Audio' which has a bunch of silly ass graphs and some plugins... You can mix with the virtual board or with a screen that demonstrates spacial relationship between tracks (It's a full featured demo, just the mp3. converter in it only has like 30 uses, but hell, I simple save it as a Wav file and use a Wav. to Mp3- Mp3. to Wav thing I also down loaded and it works fine.

If I can get some sleep tonight, then I'll do some tracks in the morning.

GO CUBS
(The Model T Ford was released the same year the Cubs last won the World Series!)
:)

Thanks for the offer but, I think I will pass.

I have had enough digital fun to last me a good long while today.

I didn't even have a power failure here and I still managed to kill two hours of work with the wrong click of a mouse!

I will happily go back to my analog rig.

Cheers! :)

So am I supposed to let my machine warm up a bit before I record?

I hope so 'cus it's a great time for coffee.

Cubs Tonight!

So how is everyone today??
It's dizzling various shades of grey here in Chicago and kind of chilly as well... It's sore throat and headache weather.
(Remember a time when Drizzle didn't have anything to do with Nizzle or Fo'Shizzle?)

Well I hate my keyboard drum machine! But the bass guitar on it sounds way better than it did through my Porta, so it's an even trade then I guess. I have three tracks on tape, but I'm not happy with two of them. (LOL) Doing the live guitar was so freaking easy with real mic pres and a 57! I thought the drums would be easy and I'd have to crank my amp to high heaven to get the meters moving for my guitar, but it was the other way around! I have to keep playing with the guitar tone and warm it up.
I must have a loose/mis connection or a bad cable on one of my tape returns... I'm NOT looking forward to tracking that down!!
So all over today I learned how different things are from the Porta Two world to the 1/2 inch world. Lots of headroom, but really no noise to blend and mask all of the bad playing in.
(This will force me to play better I suppose.)
Oh man, talk about a dick over! The leech children never returned my long guitar cable, so I've been going from near my amp to do adjustments to over to the board to get a level, but having to taking off my guitar and put it back on either way!

So if I run my amps Headphone Out into a channels Line In will I destroy anything??

Cubs Tonight Baby!!!
:)

I LOVE THIS GEAR!!!

I warmed up my guitar tone, pulled back some of the distortion and double tracked.... WHAMO BIG SOUND!!!

I'm in love again!

Go Cubs
:)

Hey Billy is tonight the night for the cubs or what?
It sounds like you are having a good time with that Machine and mixer there.
Now I need to get back at some recording now that summer is over and I cant go boating I hope to get something recorded.

And Ghost thanks for the spread sheet there it helps alot.

Now that eveyone is set up when are we going to do that Collab.

And what happen to Reel? I havnt seen anything from him in a while.

You go fishing out on that thar boat Herm???
(You ever go snaggin' in December down at Lincoln Park lagoon??)

Is it gonna be a game or what??? OMFG!
( I've heard all kinds of songs today for the Cubs, but no one it seems can decide which one they wanna go with!
Styx "The best of times" , Smashing Pumpkins "Today" AND "Tonight Tonight" just to name a few.

I saw Reel here this morning I think it was.
Maybe he's having at another tune... For the Cubs of course!

I'm having fun, but I just can't do the vocals on this song! LOL
I couldn't before and still can't... It's weird, BUT I learned how to use the mixer no problem,,,Still haven't mixed down OR added verb, but no sweat... I'll probably do a whole other song as my first on here.

Once I'm comfortable using everything AND I get back to playing (Which I haven't been doing for a month or two), then I'll colab maybe.

TONIGHT TONIGHT!
:)
(Ok, For ten Gajillion Cubs points.. (1) Name the Chicago intersection that has a statue of a man and a horse... (2) Who is the man? (3) What do we do to this statue to welcome visiting Baseball teams to the Northside???

LOL-But what about fishing & snaggin'?
(I will post the answer at 7:00pm CT)

WOO HOO!
