compressor settings for recording vocals

One other factor is time. If you're recording commercially or just doing some tracks and don't want to waste time, you can comp on the way in and not have to spend the time during mix down to send it out and back again. If you know what youre doing you can ssve time getting it right from the start.
 
I think it's pretty simple. If you don't have any idea how the comp works( ie asking what settings to use) then the best advise is to not apply compression while tracking. Take the dry track and experiment with different settings to achieve the desired results.
If you are familiar with your equipment, then by all means use it going in. It's a great tool to shape your source while recording.
