Compression in a truck

So I was involved in an accident, and while my truck is in the shop, the other insurance company is paying for me to rent a vehicle. Its a 2004 Ford F150, not really my style, but it is pretty nice. I was listening to some of my cd's and noticed that they seemed to be louder than normal, like there was more compression than normal. I happened to look down at the stereo, and there is a button that says "comp". Apparently there is a compressor. Now you cant change any of the settings, but you can turn it off and on. Kind of interesting I thought. Anyone else have a compressor option on their newer car? I though that it was interesting that it was labeled comp instead of the typical "loud".
 
My DVD player has a compressor. They don't call it that but it has a "late night" setting which according to them is supposed to bring down the volume during loud action scenes and bring up the volume on the quiet scenes.Sounds like a compressor to me, no ?
 
Loudness is an exaggeration of lows & highs.

A lot of stock stereos are coming with compression options lately. Nice to see one actually labeled properly, though...

Interesting that as the volume wars progress that the car manufacturers are actually adding even more... :confused:

Hmmmm...my refrigerator, and my air conditioning units have compressors too! Where will this madness stop?
 
Ford Focuses have this as well. I always left it off....

A lot of people like it. I think the thing is that no one pays attention to their music. It's just noise to kill time to. It's sad... but that's the rest of the world.
 
Its a common feature in Magnavox televisions...comes in handy with commercials in the late hours.
 
I have that feature on My Mercury Mountaineer. I use it all the time when listening to CD's, which is the only time you can use it, It really works well on poorly mastered Cd's. I noticed the other day that on this one album I just bought, which is mastered well, or at least sounds very good to my ear and basically in a/b 'ing back and forth between no compression and compression activated had little noticeable effect.
 
I had it built into my TV as well once, but man it sounded like shit! It pumped everything, my wife even hated it and she ain't the type to nitpick about sound etc.

The loudness button = the disco smile. :)

I run drum buss through my magnavox. second best compressor i ever used
 
I have a pretty nice air compressor. It'll fit in the back of my truck.
Does that count?
 
It helps the air pressure in your spray rig but it doesn't change the compression in your engine.
