Does compression do anything to clean up or warm up vocals? I've used the on-board compression in Ntrack, but can't really distinguish any difference. I'm using a Samson R11 thru a Darla for the time being and vocals seem to clip in the highs. Any ideas?

Compression will just even out the vocal and help it sit in a mix better.....for warm vocals, you are wanting a good condenser mic and a good preamp.....

I think you should get a new mic. Try a sm58 or 58 beta, or get a condensor if you have the money.

Id say a preamp is in order before a new mic...at least from what Im reading, you are going straight from the mic into the soundcard?.....

I was going to play with going into the amp and micing the amp vs straight into the mixer. 42 year old smoker....anything I can find to help!:p

If you compress a signal hard you can get it to sound sort of 'thick' (?), it isn't exactly warmth but it can sound good at times.

I like to use it on snare and sometimes on hard rock vocals.

P.S. Different compressors sound different when pushed hard, each has it's own sound, so you may need to try a few.

Dammit I missed out....Musicians Friend just had them 3 for 69.99 but now they are discontinued.....

Ok you need a mic and a preamp.....but now I see you mentioned mixer....what kind of mixer?....

Carter, thanks for pointing out my stupidity.....with that R11, the only think that will warm it up is a good torch.....

"..what kind of mixer?"

Well, for now that would be my "one notch above Radio Shack" Behringer 1602! :D I'm upgrading mics first, and in so doing I'm interested in mics that will be effective with vocals as well as guitar amp. You gave me some direction on possibilities in another post. I liked the idea of double micing. The preamp and compressor issues are still open
as well.
- Thanks

Actually I think Behringer is secretly owned by Radio Shack. Anyways I think Gidge's suggestion in your other post is a great one, an sm57 is great for guitar amps and good for vocals and if you can swing for a condensor as well then that would be even better.

Oh yeah, I also would highly suggest you listen to Gidge with his torch idea. Take pictures and post them if you do it.:D

It wasnt long ago my best mic was 2 notches below Radio Shack...dont take it as an insult...If you have a Behringer, thats good...you have a preamp and phantom power....I would go with a decent condenser first....and believe me, I know how it feels to need everything, but not even having the budget for the next item....I think with a decent condenser and the (gulp!)R11 for double mic'ing you can get some good results.....let me know your $$$ budget, and we could hook you up with some recommendations....

Two notches below radio shack, I didn't know Fisher Price made microphones Gidge:D

Fischer-Price! ...you're killin me!:D I got three Radio Shack mics for Xmas. I'll post the roast pictures.
Thanks Gidge, Carter
Fischer-Price.....f#@K me! Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha:D

What???? Wal-Mart????? I thought they gave you "The Best Products at the Lowest Prices", I guess you cant trust advertising anymore.

hey getuhgrip, try doing some of them on a BBQ pit as well as the torch. It would be nice to know which turn out the best.

Yeah, but what if I spliced all four cables together and made one big RadioShack/Samson mic. Come on, that would have to be cool!:D
