Best tip....dont use charcoal.....pecan wood all the way....adds a nice flavor to that warm mic.....
seriously, grip...outside of my WalMart mics , i have one mic, a Shure sm57 ($79)...If you can spring for more, like in the $150 to $200 range you can get a pretty damn good condenser....up in that range, Id suggest you try them out somewhere first....but give the sm57 a try...it might surprise you....
oh, and that crackling and clipping you are hearing means its time to stoke the fire and turn the mic before it burns.....
