Completely new to recording.

Hello, my grandma recently decided to invest into recording so that when me and my brothers sing and play instruments etc. we can just record from home.

I will be doing all the mixing and what not on my computer, but the problem is that the room I have for recording in my house is on the other side from where my computer is, so I need something to record that is portable that will keep the quality. Also probably a new sound card because mine is just a sblive gamer card. I'm running on an amd 1800xp with 512 megs sdram. Recommend some mics to get also, I have no idea about that. I am already looking into getting either tannoy mx-2/3 speakers or some acoustic energy speakers for monitors.

Your options are endless. Do you have a budget? For portability there are several all-in-one hard disc recorders available that are rack or console mountable. In most cases you can record multiple tracks on one of these and then export them as .wav files or other format that can be uploaded into an editing program on your PC.

Get a soundcard with good digital-to-analog converters and run the output to an amplifier that you can use to power your monitors.

As far as mics go, they can get very expensive. Shure makes decent mics for doing guitars and drums that aren't super pricey. Check the mics section on the bbs and you can see what people are using.

Mic= Shure Sm 57. You will need some sort of Pre-amp.

Are you asking if you should get a laptop? I would move the computer, but I guess that is not an option.

Yup, you need a better soundcard. Tell us how many people/instruments you plan to record at one time.

If there's some money behind this you really have alot of choices. The decision is going to come down to what you are comfortable doing. The easiest thing would be to move the computer. Or you could build a second one just for audio or get a hard disk recorder. If you stick with the computer, you'll definitely need a new sound card. well I'm trying to keep the price of the recording equipment under 1k, but I'm sure that it can vary. for recording I could record all at once (3 voices and piano) or just one at a time if I had to. it doesn't really matter. I 'can' move my computer, but I would rather not, if it would save a lot of cash, definately I would move it. I was just wondering also if there is a portable recording thing, that I could record upstairs then bring the recording device downstairs and put all the tracks onto my computer and mix, or what.

If you only have 1k to blow then then a portable recorder will eat that up pretty quickly. You barely have enough for a small mixer preamp, sound card, software and a mic.
