What is the biggest Benefit you get our of adding these products tot he RNP.. Increased Headroom ????? Sounds pretty interesting.

No. You don't get increased headroom. You get a "color"; some more noticeable than others.

On the idea of just abritrarily adding transformers to the output of this or that preamp, there are some cautions.

Hooking a 1:1 transformer onto an RC coupled active balanced output or unbalanced output can sometimes cause strange response peaks in the subsonic range, which can make for flabby sounding bass.

I have personally seen this with a Jensen JT-11FMCF 1:1 trans driven off a cap coupled NE5532 with 10 uF output cap. When I changed the cap to 100 uF was basically eliminated (very hard to see on the scope), and changing the circuit to DC coupled (add a servo) as Jensen recommends completely eliminates it. The techs at JEnsen confirm the behavior, its an RLC tuned circuit effect, and will happen with all transformers, not just Jensens, and what freq is dependent on the R (output impedance of driver), C (coupling cap size), and L (primary inductance of transformer).

The point is just inserting transformers can have unintended consequences. Cap size, series resistance, opamp specs will all impact this.

I just wanted to update the above...

I have since found-out the above data on the DaviSound "Mic-All" preamp is incorrect. It is +32dBu and NOT dBV as previously thought. The quoted dBV figure is based on the old designation before replacing it with dBu to aviod confusion.

I suppose it should also be noted that headroom can easily change a couple dB depending on load.

ohhhhh.... Color.... Are these interchangeable.???????

color and headroom or not interchangeable

color is more or less the 'flavor' of the sound

and headroom is how loud you can go before audible distortion

a simplistic explanation someone else can probably get more technical if you need it

Well, it looks like you answered your own question.
Obviously, color and headroom are NOT interchangeable.

Wow... I was sure that this was going to be, just about everything under $1500 was going to be colored therefore a trick question?

Heh heh:D

So I presume the units are soldered into the preamp... I didn't think I answered my own question...

Nevermind... Ill most likely just buy a different unit to add to this little guy....

Oh... Sorry... I just now realized you it wasn't you who answered your question... For some reason I thought it was you who answered question, not Teacher! Doh!

Anyway, no. They wouldn't be soldered in, as the RNP wouldn't have enough room... You'd probably want to make a 4-ch. or 2 2-ch. break-out box(s) of some-sort.

Another option is to get 2 FMR RNP's (4 channels there) and make your own Sowter or Crimson based transformer boxes that run at line level and run the transformers after the preamp.

Why would you want to do this? What would it do to the sound? What are the pros to this setup?

John, I'd go with something like the Vintech Dual 72 $1250 and an FRM RNP $450. That's 4 channel of colored pres for $1700.

I agree with Nathan that it's better to get two really good pres rather than four. That's why I put more money into the Vintech with less in the RNP - rather than four equally priced pres per channel.

The TL Audio 5001 Quad Valve Preamp is a cool 4-channel colored pre for $600 - but it's not in the league with the Vintech.

Speaking of colored, anyone here had a chance to try the Chandler dual mic pre that goes for about $1600? Looks very interesting...
