Acoustic. Meh. :p

That's why you save every penny you can spare and remain diligent in not spending it or living outside your means. If you drink, smoke or do anything that is essentially a waste of money like going to the movies or buying fast food, stop... Stop or at least save it for special occasions. Work out instead because exercise is free lol. Then you can get what ever guitar you want and it'll mean much more to you because you'll have really earned it and wanted it so bad for so long you can taste it. Envision yourself playing your new guitar every day to keep you motivated. Tell yourself you'll never get it and you probably never will...

Damn. I never realized you were are all "rational" and stuff.

Ah yes. I know the problem. I've done the same thing quite a bit and have owned at least 40 to 100 different guitars in my life time. Not exactly sure how many guitars I've owned. And it's funny because when I rationalized things it was the exact opposite. I concluded I would rather own one super nice guitar than to own 10 crappy guitars. I bought a few beat up acoustics on Craigslist too just to have something to play until I could get a much nicer guitar, didn't pay over 40 for either and sold them both over the weekend. If you can find a guitar that makes you earn to play it you'll be doing yourself a favor because your abilities wont be limited for very long when you just can't seem to stop playing your guitar.

I think you're right about guitars. I own a Les Paul and Strat, if I get another Guitar it will be probably be a nice as hell acoustic like yours.

I do have a bit of a sickness for wristwatches, however, and that is where I can see the other side; I've got the stomach for $300 watches all day
long, but the idea of buying a $3000 Sinn U2 doesn' even register with me. So I have a whole bunch of cool watches and can't ever decide which one I want to wear today. :p

I actually am I really stand up guy although I have many faults, just like everyone else. I guess it might be hard to tell on the internet that 75% of the things I say are not intended to be taken seriously. I guess my sense of humor can be a bit odd at times, but as long as it makes me laugh that's all that matters :D

I wouldn't pay over 10 dollars for a watch. I'm the type of guy who spends a lot of time thinking about it. I would hate to waste $300 dollars, much less $300 dollars X10 on a bunch of "nice" watches. In the back of my mind I'll be wishing I bought the $3000 dollar watch. So, I would rather save the money and just put out for the real deal than to fuck around with a bunch of bullshit watches. And you know that when people see you wearing the $3000 dollar watch they'll be thinking "damn home boy got class", but no one is going to notice the $300 dollar watch, unless their dirt poor and think it's the shit lol. I also have a fear of loss, theft, damage etc. for an expensive item like that. So, I even go as far as having things insured so that if anything goes wrong I'll be able to replace my treasures :D

To me they are treasures, what others think doesn't matter...

Nice going, you picked a good one. I've had my D-41 for about 4 years now, and it is still my prized posession. Finding the right acoustic is one of life's true satisfactions.

I've had mine for about 38 years now and it's still my most prized possession.
Very good score sir. Martins rule.

Sweet, years ago my mother in law used to play a D28 in a professional setting. I always loved the way it sounded. I will say the price has really gone up since then, I to will probably never own one personally . . . but I can dream. Enjoy

I know what you mean. Saving for the best equipment, while playing junk is a lot of fun, but I've been lucky. I've only owned one acoustic (a Yamaha with really great playability) and I never get tired of playing it. I've only been playing guitar for about 5 years now (my brother is awesome, and I never needed to learn til I moved 3000 miles away from him). I was a bass player and started out with a P-Bass body I scavenged at a concert. (bass was smashed onstage and thrown to the crowd). The electronics were junk and I had no neck, but for $100 in parts and a brass nut my dad machined out of an IH sheer pin I had one killer bass (for a 13 year old.) Played that bass for 12 years before replacing it with one of the original Swedish built Headways. Now I've got an acoustic/electric 5-string and I love it to death, but never did save up for that alembic I always wanted....:thumbs up:

Congrats on a great guitar. Played with one in GC at Spokane years ago, and the action was amazing. I believe the one I played was a D35 though and it was something my brother was looking at purchasing...

That's beautiful! I have a '62 D-28 but it needs a neck reset and some cracks fixed. About $800 worth of work.

Very cool. Rated "Flood" on the "Drool" scale.

I ws shopping for an acoustic a few years ago and was back and forth between Martin and Taylor. It's a tough call, ain't it. I went with the martin, though without the high drool factor.

Congrats!!

I didn't play the D35 although they did have one. It was love at first pluck with the HD28. I originally wanted an Gibson Advanced Jumbo and played it along with all the other Gibson acoustics they had. None of the Gibson lived up to their looks or price tag. They looked real classic and have a lot of visual appeal, but did not sound or perform as well as the Martin HD28 in my opinion. They weren't even fun to play either. I would save all my money and sell all my gear to get the one I want if that's what I have to do, but including 6 months or so of playing guitars and trying to figure out which one was right for me...

I played a lot of guitars to compare the sound and feel. None really felt just right like the HD28 did. Didn't really play many Taylor and don't care for them much, but the Martin Performance series guitars I thought really sucked. To me they sounded dull and felt weird with the wider yet thinner necks. I was going to buy a used one, but went ahead and forked out the cash for a new one along with an insurance policy as well lol. So, I've got life time warranty and coverage against theft, damage, accidents, fire, storm, flooding etc. Better safe than sorry.

This is right. My point was that I am not attracted to real expensive watches, I like the watches that I own. Also, I couldn't care less what "Homey" thinks when he looks at my wrist. I just want good pedestrian Swiss or Japanese movements in water and shock resistant cases that appeal to me visually. The fellow who owns several "lesser" guitars is the same as you and I. He is just pursuing the hobby in his own way.

I, myself, would purchase pretty much any guitar based pretty strictly on how it plays and sounds, paying extra for fine finishes or inlays wouldn't do much for me. I almost ended up with a Les Paul Studio for $800 for this reason, but it just didn't quite do it for me.

But again this is all personal preference, and it is "all good." The important thing is to keep in mind that it is a hobby and the only thing that really matters is whether you are deriving satisfaction from it.

I will admit, that is one real swell acoustic guitar, I would love to hear how it sounds!

I agree there has to be a value in what you choose. For example I really don't have expensive tastes. I don't own name brand clothes. I wear mostly jeans and black t-shits I bought from walmart for cheap as hell. $12 dollar jeans lol. My truck is a 94 Ford Explorer nothing too fancy, but keeps going year in and year out. Still haven't hit 100k miles.

My Martin is worth more than my truck lol... After playing so many guitars I knew I wouldn't be satisfied until I got the Martin. I knew after playing it and comparing it to others that I could settle for less, but I just didn't want to. There aren't many things that I would go all out on like that.

It really does bring me pure joy having it as well. I don't think I'll ever sell it or get bored with it. So far I've only gotten bored playing the same things over and over. I'm picking up and learning what ever I can find. I use to play classical guitar as well. So, I'm relearning all that stuff on the Martin which is totally cool. It has been a real pleasure owning this instrument well beyond what I even thought it would be and every time I pick it up I'm still amazed how great it feels and sounds :D

The guitar looks like it is build to last. However, for everyone out there drooling, it takes time to get the best out of any guitar. As long as you are not hanging out with a super cheapo, if you pay your dues, you will get her to rattle and hum.

I have a somewhat worn classical guitar that I got in Hong Kong in 1969. It took me a while to figure her out. But when you hear me play it you will instantly know she is mine.

Congrats.
Makes me want to drag out my acoustic and have a strum.
I haven't done anything acoustic for about 3 years.

.

There's a lot of truth to this. The more you play a guitar, the better it gets all the way around. I'd wager my old Martins sound better than their newer counter parts.

Hey FP, you mentioned that you got a steep discount.
Did you pay less than the guitar normally costs wholesale?
Did you get the good deal from making contacts while you were trying out guitars, or did it come from "out of the blue?"
I've set my imaginary upper limit for an acoustic guitar, and was curious how to go about getting the most for my money.

Majority of retailers will match and or beat any price you can confirm from another dealer. So, I contacted them all lol asking for their best price. Musicians Friend will not only match their price, but also give you a gift card for 50% of the difference. So, I went that route because no one could beat that deal... I paid about a little over 20 % less than what everyone else pays, plus will get to do a little more shopping for accessories or what ever I need at the time. Only thing that sucks is waiting for them to send me the email with the electronic "giftcard" info.

I knew which model I wanted because I got to play quite a few before ordering. I had read an ass load of reviews and the majority were good, but you would get the occasional one with someone complaining that they got a lemon of a guitar or something. So, I was worried about not playing it first, but it came in a unopened box, brand spanking new and the pics just don't do it justice. Sounded great, played great, looked great. Still hard to believe I've got one, and I'm use to having it now. I'm still extra careful with it, but helps insuring it to relieve some of the worry of owning a such a fine instrument. I mean don't think I'm loaded, we get by, but far from rich. It's a huge deal forking over that much cash for a guitar, but couldn't be happier with it :D

I suggest making sure you get the one you really want and not rushing into it. I had been planning, researching, etc. for over 6 months before buying.
