Cheap source for Maxell XL-II cassettes

I've got some old stock (used, tho) XL-II tapes. Been taken care of, stored inside, never got too hot. About 10-15 years old. Do you suppose they are still good?

I've got well-used XL-II's and XL-IIS's from that era and older that are still running strong. I don't think cassette tape stock had the same issues as reel tape had as far as sticky shed and flaky shed...I think there are some isolated brands/lines of tape that had issues, but I don't think the venerable Maxell XL-II is one of them...

...

There should be nothing wrong with 15 year XLII's, especially if they've been kept NIB. They don't go sticky or fall apart, in general. I have XLII's dated 1985 that are used but basically fine. (I wish I labelled and dated all the tapes I've ever handled, but that's another post!)....

As for the NEW XLII 90's in the above post,... no doubt the 60's have a thicker tape stock than the 90's, but C-90's can be used in cassette multitrackers fine. It's perfectly acceptable, as the later Tascam manuals 'softened' their recommendation to use as short a lenghth as practical, up to 90min, but never over. They recommend against C-120's altoghether. (I've found some C-110's and have wondered how they would hold up in a 4-tracker, but is not an issue since I have C-60's and C-90's on hand).

In brief, I think the link for Maxell XLII-90's is a good catch & great deal, at 89¢/ea (+shipping). With deals like that, I've been known to pop for 10 or 50, depending on the day.;)

The deal with C-90's in a multitracker, is with the rigorous back/forth and repeated play the tape would endure during production, it might wear, stretch and deform with super heavy use, but I've never had a blatant issue with this and decades long track record (heh: pun) of using C-90's in my Tascam Portastudios. I say: Go for it!

Anyway, XLII's and other tapes like this are on "clearance", so snatch 'em up now while you can. I've stockpiled over 1200 new, name brand Type II cassettes, & I may be due for another buy!:eek:;)

Sorry, I have trouble with brevity. It comes with well over 25 years hands-on with Portastudios.;)

Maxell UD XLII 60 minute cassettes

Hi. These cassettes are not sold on the sites listed in this thread. I used to get both 60s and 90s from Cheap Batteries.com in Brooklyn:
http://www.cheapbatteries.com/audio.htm but they no longer sell 60s. Does anyone have info on where to purchase them? Thanks a lot!

I just called J & R and they do not have the Sony UX or UX Pros mentioned either. Help!

Are there any other good cassettes except Maxell XLII 60 and TDK SM60?
I need to find some cassettes for my recorder...

What about TDK SF or SA or SA-X?

TDK SA is the exact same tape as SM, only the cassette shell is supposed to be better. IMO, it's not that much of a difference to worry about it. I've used SA and SA-X in my portastudios since 1979. I also use Maxell XLII, and for a while used Denon HD7 in the 80's. These are all great tapes.

By the way, there is no real cassette shortage... it's being horded by greedy bastards that should be shot and buried in unmarked graves. You can still find cassettes at "normal" prices, but eBay sellers would have us believe that cassettes are now rare as hen’s teeth. Hopefully sooner or later these assholes will get tired of having boxes of tape stacked up to the ceiling and start selling it at reasonable prices.

Right now they’re trying to cash in on a perceived shortage of tape. I'm waiting them out until they're practically giving it away... and trust me, they will.

If you don't have any tape right now it's not so easy to tell these sellers where to get off, so you might have to break down and buy a few over priced tapes to get you by... just don't make a habit of it. 90-minute tape tends to be cheaper and Maxell still makes it. I normally recommend 60-minute tapes, but 90-minute is technically the Tascam/Fostex recommended max and will do if you can't find shorter lengths.

There a good amount of TDK sm-x30 and 60's at Ametron In Hollywood. I dunno if Ametron is nationwide?

Thanks for your answers.... yeah I checked on eBay and there are prices like $80 for a package of 10! And some even higher....

The good thing is that I have some new SA-X from the days I used my 4-track! I'll try to find locally whatever I can and then I'll see. That's why I'm asking which are good tapes so I'll know for what I'm looking for. It'll be fun to ask about tapes! I missed the whole thing! :p

yeah like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...w?ie=UTF8&qid=1265039085&sr=1-4&condition=new

I'm dusting off my old original 424 and needing some tapes, I used to always use maxell XLII's...the rape, I mean tape supplier's linked above only have type-I crap or chrome now. might give these a try:

I'd really like some more xkII 60's...
